Watercolors of Bernal Heights by Neighbor Jessie Schlenker

Neighbor Jessie Schlenker has been doing some terrific Bernal Heights watercolors lately, and one of his pieces is now on display at the stylish Bernal Heights Library. Jessie tells Bernalwood:

I am a resident of Bernal, and like many, I’m head over heels in love with it.

My artistic relationship with San Francisco began the first time I visited the city on a family vacation. I grew up in suburbia, with its infinite varieties of the color beige, where navy blue and avocado were splashes of color. San Francisco was nourishment to this color-starved child. The variety and richness of the colors, languages, smells and the dense, visual texture of the city delighted my young mind.

The city during the hour of twilight is the focus of my work. As John Steinbeck so wonderfully puts it, “It’s the hour of the pearl. The interval between day and night when time stops and examines itself.”

The “hour of the pearl” is pure magic. The city and all her inhabitants start to relax into the evening. The sky is illuminated with fires of deep blue and turquoise while the city windows, cars, buses, bridges and streetlights glow with their own warmth. I become enchanted and feel compelled to capture that elusive light with the medium of watercolors.

My latest work is on display at the Bernal Library. it’s a painting of the corner at 18th and mission. Sorry, no photo of it yet.

It’s on display at the library because i’m part of the Russeller Watercolor Society that meets in their community room every other Friday from 1-5pm. I’m one of the organizers of the group. We have several wonderful watercolorists from the hill join us. Laurie Wigham paints with us, as you might remember.

Photographs from Last Night, or, Earthquake Weather on Bernal Hill

Earthquake Weather

It was warm last night, with a full moon, no wind, and not a cloud in the sky. In other words, classic earthquake weather, as Neighbor and Rockstar Matt Nathanson recently taught Bernalwood’s Cub Reporter.

There were no earthquakes last night, thankfully. But Bernal Hill is always a magical place on nights like last night — a warm island of darkness in an ocean of city lights.

So, as is our custom, your Bernalwood editor headed up Bernal Hill last night to take some snapshots, including the ones shown above.

Here are a few more. Enjoy this weather while is lasts, because July will be here soon enough:

UPDATE: Looks like I wasn’t the only one up on the hill last night with a camera. Neighbor Boris had the moonrise covered as well:

If Bernal Hill Was a Person, Would She Be Like This?

BernalHillperson

The smarties over at the Bold Italic published a little article this week which seeks to describe various San Francisco parks in terms of the kind of people they would be if they were people. Which is an odd conceit, because they are not people; theyre parks. But still… let’s just go with it.

Anyway, here’s the kind of person they say Bernal Hill would be if it was a person (which, as we have already established, it actually isn’t):

BERNAL HILL
42, female, 5’6″, 150 lbs

Bernal Hill has always been somewhat removed from traditional social circles. She’s the type to stand off to the side at dinner parties, never one to reach out to others to make plans, and is most comfortable when she’s alone. However, despite this reclusive behavior, she’s not a negative person – far from it. With a smile and a sharp eye, she pays attention to what others are doing, just like a lone eagle might attentively survey the land.

In other words, Bernal Hill is basically… Alanis Morissette? Hmm.

Remember when Starbucks filmed that commercial on Bernal Hill a few weeks back?  Well the commercial is now live, and we can see our role in it.

The video is a montage that celebrates the simple pleasures of an enlightened urban lifestyle flush with fashionable friends, a well-curated collection of accessories, vintage 4×4 vehicles, warm beverages, ample amounts of leisure time and… lots of colorful boxes on Bernal Hill:

UPDATED: Man Killed During SFPD Confrontation on Bernal Hill Identified; Community Meeting Announced

incidentscene.ktvu

The man killed on Bernal Hill during a confrontation with the SFPD on Friday has been identified as Alejandro Nieto, 28, of San Francisco.

Vivian Ho at the SF Chronicle reports:

Police officials said the officers were investigating reports of a man with a gun in Bernal Heights Park when they encountered Nieto on a paved pedestrian path on the north slope of the park.

Nieto appeared to draw a weapon, and at least two officers began firing at him, said police Deputy Chief Lyn Tomioka. Some witnesses and friends of Nieto believe he had a stun gun.

Tomioka said she didn’t know if Nieto had exchanged fire with the officers, but said a weapon was discovered close to his body. Police have not said what the weapon was.

Residents and park goers reported seeing a man, possibly with a holstered weapon, behaving strangely on the hill just prior to the shooting.

One witness, Isaac McGowan, said his wife may have seen the man as she ran up the hill just before the shooting.

“Two guys walking toward her warned her that he was wearing a holstered gun,” McGowan said. “She looked again and he was air boxing. She ran down the hill away from him and warned everyone walking up.”

Another witness, who declined to give his name, said he was walking his dog in the park just after 7 p.m. when the dog came upon a man eating potato chips. The dog got excited, scaring the man, who jumped up on a bench and stared acting erratically.

According to the witness, the man pulled out a pistol-type stun gun and pointed it at the dog, leading the witness to call the dog back and yell at the man.

The man then stated “flexing,” yelling profanities and threatening him, the witness said. The witness said he quickly left the area, went home and called police.

Possessing Tasers and other stun guns is legal in California, with the exception of convicted felons, drug addicts and people who have misused the devices in the past.

Friends of Nieto say he had experience with stun guns but did not own handgun.

Nieto, known as Alex to his friends, was known as a nonviolent and compassionate young man who worked to better his community, whether through volunteer work or through his Buddhism, said his friend Jonathan Bonato, 53.

Bonato met Nieto in 2008, and worked with him and the Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai International on setting up the Victory Over Violence exhibit in the Bayview neighborhood.

Nieto once worked at the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, fighting for youth and against social injustice in the area where he spent much of his life, Bonato said.

“He was an encouragement and inspiration to me,” Bonato said. “I just never in my wildest imagination connected the story on Friday with Alex.”

Bonato said Nieto also held a security job for some time. Nieto also studied criminal justice at City College.

Bonato said the officers’ actions that night have Nieto’s friends “definitely concerned.” They will be holding a vigil at the spot where he died at 5 p.m. Monday night.

UPDATE: Captain Tim Falvey from Ingleside Station has accounted plans to hold a community meeting tomorrow, Tuesday evening, to discuss the incident:

The will be a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 6:00 PM at Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School, 3125 Cesar Chavez. The meeting will be to discuss the officer involved shooting of Friday, March 21, 2014 at Bernal Heights Park.

Potrero Photographer Captures Spooky Bernal Hill Moonrise

dleu.moonhill

Bernalwood loves the work of photographer Daniel Leu, because he doesn’t live in Bernal.

What we mean is… it would be great if he did live in Bernal. But he doesn’t. Instead, Daniel hails from Potrero, so instead of taking amazing photos from Bernal Heights, Daniel instead takes amazing photos of Bernal Heights. Which actually works out rather well for us.

For example, last night, Daniel set out to take a photo of the moon rising behind Bernal Hill:

A low layer of clouds blocked the moonrise a bit, but eventually the moon showed up. The bottom part of the moon is still hidden by some clouds. But this makes it a bit more interesting as well than just having the plain moon.

Boom!  Right? It’s all about the perspective.

Check out his blog post; Daniel also took a dusk photo of Bernal Hill that’s so beautiful it will make you crave a chilled glass of fine white wine.

Meanwhile, we would like to nominate photographer Daniel Leu to become an Honorary Citizen of Bernalwood. Is there a second?

Colored Lights Bring New Waterfront Mural to Life at Night

pier 92 cow bubbles-1

The new mural on the waterfront silos visible from the eastern side  of Bernal was completed a few weeks ago. Now the multicolored lights that animate the mural at night are also live, and the result is rather wonderful.

To review: The mural is called Bayview Rise, and it was created by Haddad | Drugan under the auspices of the Port of San Francisco:

Bayview Rise is an illuminated animated mural located at the Port of San Francisco’s Pier 92 grain silos on Islais Creek. The project weaves together iconic imagery reflecting the Bayview neighborhood’s changing economy, ecology, and community. Its large-scale graphics will make its primary images visible from a distance, while views up close will reveal the abstract patterns from which those images are composed. In the night sky, the imagery is animated with lighting effects to allow viewers to enjoy the work throughout the day. The artwork is conceived as a gateway into Bayview Hunters Point and will be visible and changing from day to night.

Neighbor Michelle described the illumination of the project after spending some time with it:

Seeing it transform before your very eyes is so much more powerful than any still shot.  I have attached a small teaser…a video I shot a few weeks ago when the artist was in town from Seattle to test out the piece.  It is amazing that the changing imagery is not projection, but all paint and the different pictures revealed by the color of the light directed at the paint.  The fellows who installed the lights installed some of the lights on the Bay Bridge art piece as well.

The piece is scheduled to be up for a few years, so there will be plenty of time to enjoy it.  While not visible from our house on Winfield, it can be seen quite well from the glamorous east slope of Bernal… and Neighbors Shane, Katy, Deckie and Evelyn have a great view right through their front door!

Neighbor Michelle’s onsite video demonstrates the mural’s magical morphing powers:

UPDATE: Damon A.B.  created this supersexy map that shows the points east of the mural where it is visible. It’s interactive and clickyclicky, so check it out:

Bayshore Fire Creates Illusory Mt. Sutrito Eruption

mountsutrito

Neighbor Brandon made a comment about yesterday’s big industrial fire in Bayshore, to the effect that from the western side of Bernal Hill, the smoke from the blaze made it look like a volcano had erupted at the peak of Bernal Hill.

Brandon said:

The picture from 29th [Street] makes it look like Mount Sutrito has erupted.

True enough, And here’s a photo Tom Baker shared in the Bernalwood Facebook group that makes that illusion even more complete. Behold, the eruption of Mt. Sutrito, as seen from Diamond Heights.

New, High-Tech Solar Streetlight May Deter Illegal Dumpers. Maybe.

IMG_0868

The north entrance to Bernal Heights Park has been the site of many illegal dumping attacks, over the years, all done under the cover of darkness. But a new high-tech solar-powered streetlight should make the parking area a bit less attractive to debris-dumping hooligans.

IMG_0869

It’s “Off-Grid,” and it’s self-contained, complete with internal batteries. I only noticed it this week, but I almost walked by it without seeing it, so I wonder when it was actually installed. Neighbors?

But here’s the most important thing. It works! It really lights up!

The extra photons will come in handy since the anti-dumping Eye of Sautrito has been largely repurposed for Burrito Railgun defense.

Starbucks Comes to Bernal Heights (to Film a Commercial. Whew!)

Starbucks1

Don’t be alarmed by all the mysterious cubes on Bernal Hill today… it’s just Starbucks filming a commercial.

Wait… STARBUCKS??!!  Eeeeeeeeeeek!

Neighbor Emily tells it:

Was walking on the hill this morning and came across a nice photo op!

Apparently it’s top secret,  Starbucks is filming a commercial on our hill.  Ok we can share our hill, but they better not try to open one in our ‘hood!

Amen.

This winter has been freakishly warm and dry, which is simultaneously wonderful and alarming. Bernal neighbor and superstar illustrator Ashley Wolff has been documenting this phenomenon in her #DroughtDiaries2014, an ongoing series of illustrations that capture these warm-weather days as seen atop Bernal Hill.
