Talented Artist Captures the Very Best View from Bernal Hill

path-before-sunset

The Bernal Heights cognoscenti know that one of the very best views in all of Bernalwood is found on the west side of the hill, looking north toward downtown, in the area the local skiers call Owl’s Nest.

The perspective from that spot offers a dramatic contrast between the feral rusticity of Bernal Hill and the angular modernity of the downtown San Francisco skyline, and it is rather magical.

Artist David Cheifetz recently completed a painting called “Path Before Sunset, Bernal Heights” that captures the cityscape from that magical location during a particularly magical time of day. The painting will debut this July at David’s solo show at the Studio Gallery in North Beach.

As an alternative, however, the view from the same spot on Bernal Hill is open for public viewing during daylight hours, 365 days a year.

Ghost of Lyceum Theater Haunts Safeway Parking Lot

bernal.lyceumtheater

Over on the Facebook, the Bernal Heights History Project shares this terrific photo of the former Lyceum Theater, which stood on Mission Street at the intersection with Virginia, at the north entrance to our Taoist Safeway.

The photo above was taken in the 1920s, and a brief history of the 1400-seat Lyceum lives on at the Cinema Treasures website:

The Lyceum Theatre opened in mid-1907, with vaudeville and motion pictures. By the late-1920’s it was featuring Vitaphone Talking Pictures, and remained a popular low priced, late run house for patrons of the outer Mission district for the next twenty-five years.

Like so many other secondary houses, it was one of the first to feel the impact of television in the early-1950’s, and, after several closings and re-openings, became the temporary home of the San Francisco Revival Center [church], before they moved to the former State/Del Mar (q.v.) which they then made their permanent home.

Here’s a shot of the interior:

lyceuminterior

Lest we be tempted by nostalgia, one commenter at the Cinema Treasures site recalls that there was little to love about the Lyceum in its later days:

My aunt took me there once when I was a little girl. If Bette Davis went in there she would have said what a dump. It was full of people that kinda looked hard on their luck. We were both itching terribly afterwards and when I got home I had little bumps on my neck and my mother was furious. She called and raised hell and they told her that the exterminator was coming in, and offered her a couple of free passes. She yelled at him to save his passes and take the money and spray the damn place. Never went there again.

The Bernal Heights History Project notes that this experience was not uncommon:

Some locals called the Lyceum the Lice House because they often came home itching!

And of course, here’s how the site of the former Lyceum looks today:

Update: Fundraising Continues for Bernal Neighbor’s Cancer Fight

Mary'sVictory

Neighbor Micky sends along news about Neighbor Mary Isham of Andover Street, who is now battling liver cancer. Her fundraising drive to pay for cancer treatment will soon come to an end.

Micky says:

Bernalwood’s January 7 story on Mary Isham’s campaign to raise money for much-needed cancer treatment helped her generate over 25 donations on her fundraising drive which ends on March 31.

When Mary returned from her first trip to Germany, she was detained by customs in San Francisco for over 2 1/2 hours because of a difference in the radiation identified in her body and her backpack. San Francisco Chronicle covered the story and when she returned form her next trip to Germany, she was barely off the plane when she was pulled aside by custom officials. They apologized for her difficult experience the last time and personally escorted her through many doors until she landed on the street without any search or scans!

New Signs Mark the Fabulousness That Is Vista Pointe Garden

VPG 03.22.13d

VPG 03.22.13e

The dedication ceremony for the aptly named Vista Pointe Garden on the northeast summit of Bernal Hill happened last June; it was a star-studded gala that included a celebrity appearance by Mayor Ed Lee. Now Neighbor Julian Wyler, the project leader and prime-mover behind the creation of the fabulous mini-park, writes to tell us that the finishing touch at Vista Pointe is now in place:

Our Vista Pointe Garden signs were finally installed this past week by DPW.  The Friends of Bernal Gardens are grateful to Supervisor David Campos for committing the funds to install the two signs.

BTW, Neighbor Julian is the founder of The Friends of Bernal Gardens (TFBG), “a volunteer, grassroots organization dedicated to the transformation of blighted public spaces into gardens that 1) reclaim habitat for bees, butterflies, birds, and 2) promote community pride.” To learn more about TFBG or to join its merry ranks, email <thefriendsofbernalgardens AT gmail DOTCOM>, visit http://www.SFPA.org, or contact the Street Parks Program at 415 641-2637.

Introducing Bernalwood… The Magazine

bernalwood.cover2

As our longtime readers know, Bernalwood is many things. It’s a glamour-soaked nickname for Bernal Heights, our fabulous neighborhood. Bernalwood is a blog. Bernalwood is a Flickr group. Bernalwood is a Twitter account. And now, Bernalwood is a magazine.

Let me back up and explain. By day I work at Flipboard, a company that produces a rather lovely app for reading news feeds on your iOS or Android gadgets. Last night, Flipboard introduced a new version of the app that makes it possible to curate and save articles, tweets, and photographs into a digital magazine which (much like the rest of Flipboard) looks rather sexy.

For the last few months, I’ve been test-driving the new version of Flipboard by publishing a magazine called (…wait for it…) Bernalwood! In essence, it’s a curated compilation of all the other manifestations of Bernalwood, all packaged together in one place, in a paginated, visually rich format.

bernalmag.2

In practical terms, that means I’ve combined the posts from the Bernalwood blog with images submitted to the Bernalwood Flickr group and clever/funny/insightful posts about Bernal Heights that have been posted to Twitter. The result is a way-new sort of neighborhood news publication that you can read right now on your iOS device (Android is coming soon), but which feels like a glossy magazine.

If you have a smartphone or tablet, just follow this link from your device to download Flipboard. Once the app is installed, search for Bernalwood, then tap the “Subscribe” ribbon at the top left to add Bernalwood magazine to your Flipboard.

bernalmag.1

Don’t worry… the Bernalwood blog isn’t going anywhere. Bernalwood magazine is just a different way to get the Bernal Heights experience, from the safety and comfort of your personal device. Try it out, and thanks, as always, for playing along as we continue the Bernalwood experiment.

Oh, want to create a magazine of your very own? Go for it! The new version of Flipboard lets you do it too.

Bernal Heights Crime Report for March 2013: iGadget Crime Wave, Garage Door Opener Thefts, and Protect Your Honda

SFPD

Neighbor Sarah, your vigilant volunteer Bernal Heights crime reporter, attended the SFPD Ingleside Community meeting last week, and she filed these terrific summary notes on the latest Bernal Heights crime trends. Read on and stay safe:

Ingleside Community Meeting, 3/19/13

Captain Tim Falvey presided.

CRIME STATS & TRENDS

Increase in robberies  +43% this month, iPhones and iPads are often the targets. Lately, 63% of robberies have occurred in the second half of the month. They do not know why. SFPD is ramping up abatement operations during that timeframe.

The captain mentioned an article in the Examiner about how the telecom industry has not been as helpful in the US as its counterparts in other countries have been at adding features that will decrease incentives for phone theft. For example, in Australia and the UK, a stolen phone can be permanently disabled. DA Gascon has suggested that the cell phone makers have perverse incentives not to do this because they want you to have to buy another phone to fulfill your contract.

Arrests are WAY up. Two suspects were arrested on 3/19 after they beat up some girls to get their phones. They were “not the brightest tools in the shed” because they were located nearby, hiding in bushes and splitting the profits. One was a known juvenile offender who just turned 18.

Burglaries – spreading the word about the trend where thieves steal garage-door openers from parked cars and then open garage later, stealing bikes and anything else. So far, presumably by chance, all the garages have been standalone and did not lead into the main house – otherwise, these could have been much worse. Do NOT leave your garage-door opener in your car – it’s like leaving your house key.

Lots of firearm seizures this year – 12 vs 5 last year. Recently made an arrest in a robbery with a gun – victim had known the suspect and had his license plate number.

Even though SFPD just got email a couple of years ago and are generally behind the times technologically, one area that has exploded is video – SFPD shares lots of video among all officers (from MUNI, businesses, etc) via email, and he estimates that 30% of the time, an officer recognizes the suspect in the video. One key thing – if you or your business have video, know how to use it, download it, etc. Many people do not.

Reminder – do not use your phone near the doors on MUNI. Lots and lots of thefts occur this way. Also, do not leave your laptop in your car, even for a second. Lots of thefts lately. Same with backpacks, even if they are empty. Finally, some people have left bikes in cars and gotten those stolen lately.

Auto thefts down a little – recoveries outpacing stolen vehicles. If you have a Honda from the 1990s, get the lock re-keyed, or have a club, or a lock on brake/gas pedal. One tip – if you ever locate your own stolen car, DO NOT DRIVE IT HOME. Police may see you and think you’ve stolen it (if you’ve reported it as being stolen).

Ingleside is doing a Fugitive Recovery operation soon – checking on parolees and people on probation, working with multiple agencies.

Ingleside also continues to do traffic calming in certain busy areas. If you see the radar trailer for a few days and then it disappears, be confident that enforcement (ie, tickets) will follow.

The captain often mentions the “three Es” of law enforcement: education, environment, and enforcement. Recently someone suggested a fourth E to him – ethics. One application of this is that you should not buy stolen goods – if you do, you’re part of the problem. If you’re buying a $3000 bike for $300, or getting a good deal on an iPhone at a sketchy corner store, you are part of the problem. And, by the way, it is a crime to possess property that is stolen or that you should know is stolen.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

National Night Out – Tuesday, August 6, Miraloma Park Improvement Club.

The Community Police Advisory Board will be doing several meetings in the community (including Bernal) this year.

The PAL Cadet Program – applications due early April. This is a summer program for 14-20-year-olds. Police academy training, then internship. Information on SFPD website. Participants must have a 2.0 GPA and stay in school. Statistics for staying in school are compelling. Something like 94% of homicide victims are dropouts. 90% of murderers are dropouts. 75% of people in San Quentin are dropouts.

Ret. Sgt. Mark Hernandez working with Capt. Lazar on ALERT program – Auxiliary Law Enforcement Response Team. Like NERT, but for law enforcement after disaster. Must complete NERT training first. http://sf-police.org/index.aspx?page@19

The Neighborhood Court program continues to look for people to be volunteer adjudicators for low-level cases dealt with through restorative justice. http://www.sfdistrictattorney.org/index.aspx?page8

Next meeting – April 16, 7pm. Jennifer Choi of the City Attorney’s office will be attendance to talk about how to deal with problem houses through city code enforcement – houses with drug activity, hoarding problems, places crimes keep occurring, etc.

OTHER TIDBITS

Rani Singh of the DA’s office was in attendance – rani.singh@sfgov.org; 415-753-7703 (w). She is onsite at Ingleside in the mornings.

One final random bit of trivia from this meeting – there is a law that states you cannot loiter within 21 feet of an ATM.

Bernal Dads Pursue Glory, Honor, and Survival During Absurd LeMons Endurance Race

BDR.Hotness

As you read this now, those grease-stained gearheads from the Bernal Dads Racing team are on their way to stylish Sonoma to prep for this weekend’s 24 Hours of LeMons at Sears Point Raceway.

The battle-hardened Dads plan to race their battle-scarred Volvo 240 station wagon — affectionately known as The Whale — for 17 long hours over two consecutive days on a winding high-speed road course. As my alter-ego Telstar Logistics put it last year:

Don’t let the appearance fool you though. The Whale is kind of like the Millennium Falcon; It may not look like much, but its got it where it counts. Sure, the body has taken a lot of hits during its impossibly long LeMons career. But after so many races and so much tinkering, “the car is properly sorted,” as one Bernal Dad put it.

Your Bernalwood editor will be embedded with the Bernal Dads (and The Whale) throughout the weekend, and if you’d like to cheer from the virtual grandstands, tune your Twitter dial to @bernaldadsracer. You can also check out the Car and Driver blog, where you’ll find photos and updates from trackside.

Wish the Bernal Dads luck, because frankly… they’ll need it.

Big House on Mullen Is New Bernal Sale-Price Champion

347MullenRemember that house at 347 Mullen that hit the market recently? The sale is now complete, and our friends at Curbed SF provide the coda:

In 2008 the property was a vacant lot that sold for $399K. Shoot forward to February 28 and the big abode you see above had landed on the market asking $1,695,000. With that price tag, the 4-bed, 3.5-bath, 3,000 sq. ft. newly constructed home was the most expensive home for sale in the neighborhood. It sold today for $2,000,000, or$305,000 over asking. 347 Mullen is now the most expensive single-family home sale in Bernal Heights for at least the last three years.

Tomorrow: Cocktail Up During the Rock Bar’s One-Year Anniversary Party

RockBar_drinks

RockBar_Spec

A single year is tiny compared to the sweeping backdrop of geological history. Yet for the cocktailicious Rock Bar on 29th and Tiffany in the La Lengua Autonomous Zone, one year has been a lifetime.

Rock Bar manager Brion invites one and all to drink up during the Rock Bar’s First Anniversary Party, happening tomorrow, Thursday, March 21, from 6 pm to 2 am:

Join in celebrating Rock Bar’s first year with a revival of their famous punch ($6 special) celebrating their beloved Henry the Donkey. The Rock Bar crew will be launching their new Spring Cocktail Menu at the party (just in time for the Spring Equinox), and reviving favorite cocktails from previous menus — like The Dark Crystal, ICHI Rock, and The Real Thunderberg. The Aquarius Records-curated jukebox will be taking the evening off to make way for an exclusive set from INTERNET FAMOUS.

There has been a change of occupancy in the secret lair on Bocana Street that was until recently home to Bernal’s favorite Bryophyta-Homo Sapien mutant crossbreedNeighbor Allison reports:

Thought some of your readers might be interested to know that the meter hole formerly occupied by Mossquatch appears to have been taken over by a new tenant. Fellow goes by the name of Walroctupus.

Bernalwood has learned the new guy’s pad also includes some spiffy special effects. Check it out:
