oldbuscrew

Wow. It’s been a year already!

Tonight, Monday, Aug. 1, the critically acclaimed and positively delightful Old Bus Tavern at 3193 Mission (@ Valencia) celebrates its first year in business . Co-owner Bennet Buchanan brings news about the festivities:

Opening a neighborhood restaurant/brewery has allowed us to meet so many cool people in this city, many of whom live right here in Bernal. Also, despite all the warnings, we’ve learned that it is in fact possible to go into business with your best friends and remain as close as ever.

We want to invite all our neighbors to our combined Old Bus Tavern’s First Anniversary + Jerry Day Party on Monday, August 1st. We’ll be open from 5-10pm with live, Grateful Dead-inspired music from The Incubators (regulars at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael) from 6-9pm.

We’re going to offer the following Dead-inspired menu:

  • Grateful Bread………Buckwheat Cornbread with salted honey-miso butter and chives
  • (Green and) Brown-Eyed Women………Marinated Olives with rosemary, garlic and lemon zest
  • New Potato Caboose………Steak Fries with beef salt and garlic aioli
  • Fire on the Mountain………spicy Chili with pequin
The Pizza Tapes………Cherry Tomato Salad with brioche, burrata and charred pepper vinaigrette
  • Just Noodlin’………Spaetzel with brassicas, maitake mushrooms, whole grain mustard cream and Aztec Fuji apples

Tuesday: Celebrate 17 Years of Heartfelt with Neighbor Darcy

darcystorm

Some things change, some things stay the same, and some things stay the same because they change a lot. The fabulous Heartfelt store on Cortland has been able to stick around for a long time because its proprietor, Neighbor Darcy Lee, is obsessively focused on making sure her “contemporary five-and-dime” store always feels fresh and new.

This week, Neighbor Darcy is celebrating 17 years of Hearffelt, with an in-store party on Tuesday, July 26:

I recently looked up to see when I bought the store, and discovered it was 1999. I was a retail newbie at that time, and I jumped in with both feet.

We would like to thank the neighborhood that made 17 years possible on Tuesday, July 26th from 6-8 pm. We hope to party like its 1999, and thus are asking folks to wear purple in honor of my favorite rock star of all time. First 50 folks that wear purple get a door prize.

We’l have cookies champagne, and Mariachi Jalisco will be playing!

Congratulations, Darcy!

Tonight: The History of One Building in Bernal Heights

bernal1930s

Vicky Walker invites you to a meeting of the Bernal Heights History Project happening TONIGHT, Wednesday, July 20 at 7 pm at the lovely Bernal Library. Tonight’s episode will  look at the history of one building here in Bernal:

Patrick Silk lived in Bernal Heights for 15 years, more than a hundred years ago. His great-grandson will talk about how a family history project turned into a research project about the history of the building Patrick built, and how it has fared and changed over the next century.

This is also a show-and-tell get-together. Bring your photos, stories, and artifacts and we’ll talk! We have handouts on how to research your Bernal home, so come to the meeting if you’d like one of those. (And we’d love to hear your stories.)

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. sharp in the downstairs meeting room; turn left at the bottom of the stairs. As always, it is free and open to all.

Save the Date: The 2016 Bernal Heights Hillwide Garage Sale Happens August 13

hillwidebanner1600x1050

An important announcement for people with overstuffed garages or storage spaces AND the craphounds treasure-seekers who love them: The Bernal Heights Hillwide Garage Sale happens on Saturday August 13 this year, and registration is open now.

Neighbor Michael is co-wrangling the Hillwide Garage Sale this year, and he shares these details:

Hillwide.com is now live and ready to accept registrations for the great garage sale of 2016 that will take place on Saturday, 13-August from 9a-2p.

Hillwide has become a San Francisco tradition, and the best way for our Hillbabies to unload their crap, clear their clutter, and otherwise rightsize their lives both for cash and existential bliss.

The Hillwide is arguably the largest and most famous single day garage sale in San Francisco. Last year, we had over 150 garages participating and we raised over $3,000 for the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center, strictly from map registrations. This year, our goal is to beat that like a vintage rug from grandma’s earthquake cottage.

New this year, we have a contest for the most impressive garage sale presentation judged by Bernal’s very own Emperor Norton! Perhaps you have a band accompanying your sale, or disco themed sale complete with laser show and disco ball. Maybe you and your staff are all dressed up in costumes or selling your goods on the moon. Whatever it is, it should be festive and oh so Bernal. More info at Hillwide.com.

If you’ve been hankering for a cleansing, drink a kale juice smoothie and clean out the deepest corners of your garage, basement, bonus room or creepy storage place.

Register your treasure trove to get on the Hillwide map and make your donation to the BHNC at Hillwide.com.

Then just open your garage door on Saturday, 13-August, put on some funky grooves and pour yourself a mimosa (or two) – cos Hillwide is on!

The Hillwide elves will promote the event across the city and bring the masses to your doorstep. But you have to register for the masses to find you.

Please contact michael@michaelminson.com if you have any questions!

Cheers!

I will be discussing projects for the likes of: The Beastie Boys, Beck, My Morning Jacket, MGMT, James Bond, and Paul McCartney, in the context of life as an independent artist, based initially in Britain, but in Bernal for the last twelve years.

All are welcome, and the curious can check out the book here.

Fabulous Crowd Raises Many Thousands of $$$ During Fire Victim Fundraiser at El Rio

elriofund1

Last night’s benefit fundraiser for displaced victims of the June 18 Mission Street Fire was a wonderful thing. About 400 Bernal and Mission neighbors turned out to represent, and while the receipts are still being counted, together the event helped raise more than $10,000 — which will now be matched 1:1 by a generous corporate donor.  Plus, additional donations are still rolling in.

As always, El Rio was fabulous and magical, with an eclectic crowd mingling on the back  patio:

elriobackdeck

Inside, great bands were playing:

With a DJ spinning in the stylish main bar:

The raffle was a big hit:

elrioraffle

This lucky lady won a gen-U-ine painting salvaged from the walls of the fire-damaged 3300 Club, generously donated by the bar’s owners. Quite a souvenir:

3300painting

Of course, photos don’t give you a full sense of the scene, so here’s a video tour of El Rio filmed live last night from the Bernalwood Mobile Uplink iPhone:

Remember, even if you missed the fun last night, you can still make a tax-deductible contribution to the MEDA Fire Victim’s fund, right here.

It took a lot of work from a lot of people to make this fundraiser happen, so special thanks go out to:

  • Glamorous Bernal Neighbor Sana Saleem who spearheaded the event
  • Zack Mellette & William Fitzgerald, Google employees who helped organize the event and coordinate the raffle
  • The Mission Economic Development Corporation for managing the tax-deductable fund and assisting with raffle sales
  • Edwin Lindo, for organizing a relief fund, helping with raffle ticket sales, and being a lot of fun
  • El Rio’s Staff for being El Rio, and hosting the event, and donating bar proceeds to the cause
  • Virgil’s Sea Room right next door for hosting the overflow and donating proceeds to fire victims
  • All the stone-cold sexxxy musicians and entertainers who performed
  • All the fantastic local merchants  and donors who contributed items for the raffle
  • Ros and her team from the Red Cross, who have been with the survivors at the shelter since the fire
  • Carrie Grimes, site lead for the Google’s San Francisco office, who sponsored a fundraiser at the company which over 230 googlers supported.

And lastly, a very, very, very special thanks to…

Everyone who showed up last night! It was a beautiful thing to see so many people from all over the political map coming together for a common cause, at a time when our neighbors needed us most. Our community is our strength.

Thursday! Big, Special Bonus Fundraiser for Fire Victims at El Rio

elriologo2

There’s a big benefit for the Mission Street fire victims happening tomorrow, Thursday June 30, at the fabulous El Rio, and Bernalwood is a co-sponsor.

This is a great event to shower with copious amounts of your cash, because a generous corporate sponsor has agreed to match all the proceeds collected at the door. That means for every dollar you give, the fire victims will get twice as much of your generosity.  Here are the details:

Fundraiser for Survivors of Mission Fire on Mission St & 29th
Thursday, June 30 at 8 PM – 11:30 PM
El Rio – 3158 Mission (@Precita)

Join us for a fundraiser for survivors of the fire that burned down the homes of 58 people on Mission and 29th.

Door fee will be $10 (but no one turned away). We’ll also do a raffle. El Rio is kindly donating all bar proceeds from 8-12 to the fund.

All proceeds will go directly to the familes and will be matched 1-1 by a corporate sponsor. The Mission Economic Development Agency will process all donations and won’t be charging a fee.

You can also donate online here (with MEDA) and here (with Edwin Lindo).

Virgil’s Sea Room (the bar just next door to El Rio) will also be taking donations at the door. If there’s a long line or you want to wait, sit down and grab a cocktail while still helping our neighbors.

ATTENTION NEIGHBORS!

Bernalwood has been informed that there’s a special sneak peek opening party at the brand-new Barebottle Brewing Company happening TONIGHT, Wednesday June 15 from 4-6 pm at 1525 Cortland (@Peralta).

Howdy Neighbors!

We’ve been working on renovating the old granite cutting warehouse, which needed a lot of TLC, into a production brewery and tasting room. We (Mike, Lester, & Ben) started out as homebrewers & certified beer judges, and our specialty is making beers inspired by local places & ingredients and using a competitive process to brew the best beers.

We’ll have a Bernal Saison free fermented at Bernal Heights temperatures, a Muir Woods-inspired IPA, a Honey Brown using 120-lbs of our head brewer’s wildflower honey (he’s also a local beekeeper), and many more.

Please stop by for a pint tonight! (We’re also hiring bartenders!)

Wednesday: A Special Hillside Supper for Fans of Fungi

hillsidechefs

Chef (and glamorous Bernal neighbor) Tony Ferrari from the Hillside Supper Club on Precita Park is spreading the word about a special dinner series he’s hosting at the restaurant, with the next installment happening tomorrow, on Wednesday, June 15:

So every third Wednesday of the month, we;ve started doing producer dinners. Its 68 dollars for a set four course meal, with optional wine pairing at 39. Every course will be highlighted and include the product from the producer.

We did the first one last month, with a duck dinner with Liberty Farms. The producers are always part of each dinner, walking around meeting people and talking about the product etc. Its fun to meet them and for us to play around with different ingredients and menu changes. Its been going great and turns into a fun time.

Next, on Wednesday, June 15th, we’ll have a mushroom dinner with King of Mushrooms.

King of Mushrooms is a huge supplier for us, as mushrooms are almost always on on of our items at Hillside. Todd Spanier founded King of Mushrooms in 1996, and has been providing the entire Bay area with some of the best supply of mushrooms since. We will be serving a four course tasting (with an obvious highlight on ‘mushrooms’), plus an optional beverage pairing.

Reservations are normal though Open Table or call-in. Next month, on July 20, we’ll have a wine dinner with Bro Cellars

Hillside Supper Club has been going on for three and half years now. Things have been great, and we love our ‘hood!
