Coming Soon? The Return of the Palace Family Steak House

Palace Steakhouse Redux
Though from the outside it looks pretty much the same as it has since it closed in 2009, there’s lots happening behind the sheets of brown paper that cover the windows of the venerable Palace Steak House at the corner of Mission and Cesar Chavez. Four decades worth of accumulated kitch and grunge have been removed, and based on these exclusive photographs captured by the Bernalwood Spybot, it seems the interior of the Palace Steak House has been throughly remodeled to look retro-shabby-chic.

Meanwhile, the big white sign outside still looks worn and weathered, but astute observers will notice that all the tags and handbills have been neatly painted over.

Palace Steakhouse Redux

Yes, the Palace Family Steak House is poised for rebirth as… The Palace Family Steak House. It seems the new owners seek to maintain the spirit of the classic original, which served tasty iceberg-lettuce salads and Sizzler-style steaks at prices that were easy on the pocket. I ate there twice, and both times I felt like I’d gotten a fair value for my money. The place had its fans, including a band called (… wait for it…) Palace Family Steak House. They even created a hipster “Palace Family Steak House” theme song. Listen:

The look of the remodel suggests that the new Palace Steak House is poised to continue this quasi-earnest tradition… somehow. Bernalwood hasn’t been able to contact any of the folks involved with the new Palace Steak House — we tried stopping by a few times, but the gates were closed. And we haven’t seen a menu. But rumors are flying around the street. One of our sources heard from a guy who heard from someone who knows someone connected with the project that the Palace Family Steak House may reopen as soon as next week. We’ll see…

So practice singing that theme song, watch the space, and if you know any more details, feel free to share them with us here.

The Triumphant Return of Bernal Hill’s Lost Garbage Can

Important news for Bernal Hill dog walkers and/or enemies of errant fecal matter: The Lost Garbage Can of Bernal Boulevard has returned, now in a stylish new location across from our glamorous new Vista Pointe minipark.

Newbie Neighbor Rally provides the photo above, and the straight poop. (Sorry, couldn’t resist):

Good news for those who care about the mundane, yet mysteriously glamourous details of life in lovely Bernal Heights. The trash can that had gone in missing at the bottom of Bernal Hill is BACK! This caused quite the stir around here, even the awesome Bernalwood blog talked about it.

Here we see its glorious return, now repositioned across the street from its former location.

Woo hoo! Less poo! Meanwhile, Neighbor Renee adds:

In Praise of the New Old Clam House on Bayshore

So, it was Friday night, and we wanted to find a family-friendly restaurant where daddy could get a stiff cocktail to accompany his dinner. The thought of battling swarms of Mission hipsters at a place like Beretta or Flour and Water seemed nightmarish, and for a few minutes I felt stuck. And then it hit me: What about the New Old Clam House on Bayshore? They’ve got a full bar! They serve food! And change is afoot, so an updated taste-test seemed to be in order.

Indeed, much has changed. For one, there’s a new glassed-in patio area on the south side of the building that affords an outstanding view of passing traffic. The whole place got a new coat of paint. There’s also a Moderne-style neon sign that looks 80 years old — even though it was just installed a few weeks ago. The front doors are new and inviting, and the interior has been given a thorough spiffing-up.

Ye Newe Olde Clam House

In short, it looks pretty good, inside and out. But what of the food? And my drink?

The menu has been thoroughly revised, and while many of the old stand-bys remain — paging Mr. Cioppino, to the white courtesy phone! — there are some new surprises that bring the joint up-to-date. One very nice touch is that all guests — including my four year-old — are served a glass of warm clam broth just as soon as they are seated.

New Old Clam House

Yum! With some broth in my belly, I decided to satisfy my cocktail urge. I ordered a Tom Collins, which was made in with traditional craftsmanship — which is to say from scratch, without any high-fructose cornshite. Double yum!

For my main, I ordered the sand dabs with spicy tomato bacon sauce. It was baconlicious, and overall deeply satisfying. Triple yum!

New Old Clam House

We also got a half-crab, which arrived on a cast-iron pan sizzling with garlic butter. Quadruple yum in the pike position!

New Old Clam House

All in all, I’m a fan. Though I sure some old-timers will protest, I think the new Old Clam House fills an important niche in the Bernal restaurant ecosystem, in that there is a place in our little world for a reasonably-priced establishment where you can get a table without too much fuss, along with a stiff drink and a good piece of fish in an atmosphere that feels an awful lot like the kind of restaurant one might find expect to find somewhere along Route 46 in Clifton, New Jersey… and I mean that as high praise.

Sexy, Stoner-Friendly New Parklet Installed on 29th Street

Reader Rita sends along some news about the first parklet to appear in the Dominion of Bernalwood:

Down here in the flats (or La Lengua, or south Mission, or whatever our neighborhood gets called these days) our first parklet was just installed at Café Seventy8 on 29th Street!  Anette Roeber and her co-owners worked with the neighborhood, a local architect: Hugh  Hynes of PROTOinc and another neighbor Matt Walsh who worked with Dan Piche and Jon Petterson, all of Saturn Construction to build out the parklett this weekend.  Finishing touches and plants will be installed on the 30th when the Tiffany Avenue neighbors are celebrating theer one year anniversary of planting of the sidewalk gardens.  Then it will just be a matter of when the city installs the bike corral in the space close to the corner!

Nice work, people. That looks great! Note also, the new parklet is literally across the street from the Bernal Heights Collective. Stoner bonus!

Message from the Lucky Horseshoe: Opening Delayed!

If you were planning to get your drink on at the new Lucky Horseshoe (aka Ye Olde Skip’s Tavern) tonight, be advised that the grand opening has been delayed a few days, until Wednesday, June 29. Proprietor Lisa Marie wrote to Bernalwood to say:

During cable installation this morning our power was impacted.  We are postponing opening until we can have everything checked out and running properly. To be safe we are giving it some room for error, so we plan to open Wednesday June 29 at 4:00 in time for the 2nd of the Giants doubleheader. We will have free wi-fi and a 55″ screen.

New Neighbor Interview: Meet Dana; She Just Moved Here

New Resident
For those of us who have lived in Bernal Heights for a while, the glamour and high-society spectacles of our neighborhood are so familiar that it’s easy take it all for granted. That’s why it’s good to check in with a newcomer from time to time, to see how Bernal looks when you view it through fresh eyes.

Thus it is with great pleasure and eager curiosity that Bernalwood presents our first in an occasional series of New Neighbor Interviews, in which we will ask recent arrivals to Bernal Heights all sorts of nosey questions about their first impressions of this place we all call home. Let’s meet our first participant, shall we?

Name: Dana
Came Here From: Santa Rosa, Calf.
Move-In Date: May 21, 2011
Bernal Address: Eugenia (at Bocana)
Rent or Own? Rents 1 BR apartment in older home with 2 other units

What do you do for a living?
I work at PG&E’s service planning department. I help get electric and gas services to new or remodeled large commercial or industrial developments. My title is Industrial Power Engineer.

Why Bernal Heights?
I was going to move to Cole Valley with a friend, but after looking around with her, I decided I wanted my own place. The rents are sky high over there for not-so-nice places. I asked around for what are nice neighborhoods, and heard about Bernal Heights. I looked online and there was ONE apartment for rent, I checked it and the neighborhood out, and loved the area. My place is smaller than what I used to have, but I feel safe and cozy.

First impressions of the neighborhood?
I think its down-to-earth and welcoming. It reminds me of where I grew up in New Jersey. The hilly and narrow streets were a bit shocking when I first drove on them. I love the families walking their children and dogs around.

Any unexpected surprises after you moved in?
The tree that fell down and blocked the street was a big one. At least I met my very nice neighbors that evening. A friend told me a nickname for B.H. is Maternal Heights. I can see what she’s talking about, as there are a lot of kids.

How would you describe Bernal Heights to a friend from out of town?
Its got great weather, a nice park to go for a good walk, and the views from up on the hill are spectacular. Cortland has some great shops. The people are down-to-earth and its a diverse, safe, and seemingly friendly neighborhood.

What are your biggest concerns about your new neighborhood?
The guy who parked his motorcycle in front of my apartment has taken up two parking spots for the past two weeks 😦  Otherwise, no worries really. I’m still freaked about trying to unpack my previous 2 bedroom, 2 car garage house into a tiny one bedroom apartment.

Name your three favorite things about Bernal?

  1. The sunny-yet-breezy weather
  2. All the good energy from everyone walking around with their kids and dogs
  3. The casa salad at Vega’s.

Name three things you wish Bernal had (but which it currently does not)?

  1. Better AT&T Internet and TV service
  2. An Oliver’s grocery store like they have in Sonoma county. It’s really great, as they have cooked food to go, a really incredible salad bar, and local good food — its great for working people who are too pooped to cook.
  3. I can’t think of a third.

Skip’s Tavern Reborn as The Lucky Horseshoe

Formerly Skip's, Now Lucky Horse Shoe

Formerly Skip's, Now Lucky Horse Shoe

Formerly Skip's, Now Lucky Horse Shoe
In the grand tradition of velvet-rope stagecraft and buzz-building, the new owner of the former Skip’s Tavern on Cortland opened her doors for the first time during last night’s Summer Solstice Stroll to give the neighborhood a sneak preview of what’s to come.

Construction is still underway, and proprietor Lisa Marie told Bernalwood that the bar will officially open on Saturday. Meet Lisa (with apologies for the sub-par pic):

Formerly Skip's, Now Lucky Horse ShoeThe plan, she says, is to install some additional acoustic insulation, with an eye toward securing the coveted entertainment license that’s required to offer live music (again). More details as we get them, but in the meantime, Christopher over at Mundohood is also excited about Lisa’s plans to offer specialty and seasonal beers.

UPDATE: There are new updates about what makes the new Lucky Horseshoe promising, and old reminiscences about what made the Old Skip’s great (not necessarily in that order) over at Mundohood. Check it.

Citizens of Bernalwood, We Have a New Manhole

Fellow citizens! Please join Bernalwood in celebrating the installation of our newest manhole!

Doesn’t that sound kind of smutty? Right? But this is straight-up: Yesterday workers completed the fabrication of a new manhole as part of the sewer reconstruction project taking place on Precita Avenue.

New infrastructure is innately sexy, of course. But for those who slept through your civil engineering classes, the essential function of Bernal’s new manhole is to serve as a junction for the sewer pipes that run east from Precita and north down Shotwell.

Basically, it all works pretty much the way Richard Scarry sketched it out:

And at the end of the day, we had a finished result:

Nice work! Now, friends and neighbors, here’s to 100+ years of trouble-free drainage. (Fingers crossed.)

The New St. Mary’s Pub: Was Scary, Now Awesome

St. Mary's Pub

St. Mary's Pub

St. Mary's Pub

St. Mary's Pub

As a Northsloper, I confess I don’t get down to the south side of Bernal as often as I’d like. Fortunately, Bernalwood readers have that covered.

Reader Sandy Cardoza writes to sing praises about the new and improved St. Mary’s Pub, on the corner of Mission and Crescent:

Though I’ve lived on College Hill for nine years, I’d only been into St. Mary’s Pub twice before its recent change in ownership.  The first time shouldn’t really count because I chickened-out before sitting down to order a drink by myself.  Instead, I ended up only asking to change a couple of dollar bills for quarters, since I was in the middle of doing laundry at the laundromat across the way.  The bartender was kind enough to give me change and I realized that I recognized her from Nap’s.  Months before at Nap’s, she had made me a margarita using only limes, sugar, tequila, a splash of water, and ice.

I wanted to order another margarita from her, but the indoor cigarette smoke and the rowdy 49er fans didn’t feel very inviting.

A few years later, my partner convinced me to give the place another try.  I went in hoping to see the same bartender as before, but I was out of luck.  It could have been the same customers at the bar, though: 49ers gear, missing teeth, chain smoking.  We ordered cans of Budweiser and went to the back room to play pool.  Walking through to the backroom, I noticed how the floors were warped in some places.

Fast-forward five years: Some friends mentioned that St. Mary’s Pub is under new ownership, and one of our favorite bartenders is now working there.  Finally, something cool in this part of Bernalwood!  The new owners have given the place quite a facelift, too. The floors are no longer warped. Plus, they raised the ceiling, which makes the ambiance more airy.  You’ll still find the old regulars there — but now they light up outside and watch trippy esoteric Japanese Sci-Fi rather than football games on the bar TVs.

Drink prices are still very reasonable and they offer some real Happy Hour bargains. Stop in and make yourself comfortable because St. Mary’s may soon to become your new favorite watering hole.  Don’t forget to ask your bartender what’s on special.

Coming Soon(er): Construction Begins at Precita Park Cafe

Precita Park Plywood Cafe

As Bernalwood reported earlier, it looks like the renovation of the storefront that will soon become the Precita Park Cafe has finally started at the corner of Precita and Alabama. The plywood is up, construction has started, and we assume all sorts of magic is happening inside.

On a related note, I ran into the always-affable Charlie from Charlie’s Cafe (on the Folsom side of Precita Park) last night while I was taking the photo above. We got to talking about how the Precita Park Cafe might fare, and if it will make Precita Park itself a more sexy and glamorous destination. Time will tell, of course, but I certainly hope that a rising tide will lift all boats.

Coming to Cortland: Organic Baby Food for Savvy Short People

Cortland Avenue offers delicious, gourmet food for omnivores, herbivores, and even canines. But until now, there’s been no place that caters to high-powered babies who need hearty, healthy food to go. You know the type: The kind of kid who will one day roll down the window of his/her Rolls-Royce at a traffic light to politely borrow your Grey Poupon.

Luckily, those discriminating kids won’t have to suffer much longer. If all goes according to plan, Big Dipper Baby Food will open at the artisanal food marketplace at 331 Cortland in late May. From the press release:

Local Mom Claire Hoyt knows how hard it can be to put a freshly made organic meal on the table every night for a small child — she’s been doing so for her son Forrest for the past 18 months.  For hard working parents who want nothing but the best for their precious young ones, Big Dipper Baby Food is poised to serve fresh, organic, and delicious baby food from the Bernal Heights community in a convenient and affordable manner.

Making the transition from her career as an art director with a corporate food and house wares company, Hoyt is pursuing her lifelong dream of being a business owner. Her mother was a chef and always had her own successful restaurants and food businesses. When Hoyt became pregnant, she knew that in the next few years she would be making adjustments in her life to accomplish similar goals. When she came upon the community at 331 Cortland, she and the vendors (Paulie’s Pickling, Bernal Cutlery, Spice Hound) knew it was a perfect match for the neighborhood’s incubator space.

“I’m most excited to get started at 331 Cortland. Big Dipper has been a business plan I’ve had for over a year and having my own business is a lifelong dream,” said Hoyt.

The Bernal Heights community filled with young families is a perfect fit for a quick and healthy stop where Hoyt’s bulk creations of simple purees for infants’ first foods will be available. Purees will include items like Baked Fuji Apples with Sweet Potato, and Roasted Pears and Pineapple.

For babies graduating to the more textured and complex foods, Roasted Parsnips and Apple Mash with Cardamom; Braised Butternut Squash; and Brown Rice Pudding with Mango and Coconut Milk; are sample seasonal offerings.

There will also be selections for toddlers featuring simple classics like Chicken Potpie with some “hidden” super foods. For instance the “cream” sauce in the potpie is a yummy cauliflower and leek puree, and the biscuit topping is made with sweet potato. By sneaking in those extra vegetable servings in a way in which kids crave, parents are also happy.
