Tonight! The Language of Food: A Bernal Heights Linguist Reads the Menu

DanJurafsky

Oh hey, did you catch that article in the dining section of yesterday’s New York Times about Bernal Neighbor Dan Jurafsky, and his new book on the linguistics of food?

I read the article over my morning coffee, but I didn’t know Dan lived in Bernal… until he reached out to me later in the day. Turns out, Dan Jurafsky is a celebrity neighbor! Love that.

Neighbor Dan’s new book is called The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu, and he’s doing a reading TONIGHT at 6:30 at the fabulous Omnivore Books at Cesar Chavez and Church in (scandalous gasp!) Noe Valley.

Neighbor Dan says:

I’m a Stanford professor and Bernal resident coming up on 10 years on Winfield street near the Esmeralda slides. Just letting you know that my trade book from Norton, “The Language of Food: A Linguist Reads the Menu” just came out this week and I’ll be talking about it at Omnivore Books in Noe Valley on Thursday night 9/18 at 6:30.

Here’s the publisher’s blurb:

Why do we eat toast for breakfast, and then toast to good health at dinner? What does the turkey we eat on Thanksgiving have to do with the country on the eastern Mediterranean? Can you figure out how much your dinner will cost by counting the words on the menu? In The Language of Food, Stanford University professor and MacArthur Fellow Dan Jurafsky peels away the mysteries from the foods we think we know.

Bernal and SF figure heavily in the book, from the SF history of Green Goddess dressing Pisco Punch, and Peruvian food to the tamales at La Oaxaquena, to showing how the meaning of the word “entree” has changed over time by analyzing some of the wording on menus of Bernal restaurants, to the linguistic significance of the rich Cantonese vocabulary for smells.

Sounds very tasty. Congrats, Neighbor Dan!

Saturday Morning: Cleanup Party in Precita Park

PrecitaParkcleanup

When you look down at Precita Park from the safety and climate-contolled comfort of the Google Earth blimp, it looks… Peaceful. Pristine. Like an urban oasis.

Actually, when you look at Precita Park from street level, it looks pretty damn awesome as well.

This is no accident. Precita Park looks so super-sexy in no small part because of all the hard work Neighbor Demece Garepis has done through the years under the auspices of Precita Valley Neighbors, the volunteer group she so valiantly leads.

Tomorrow morning, PVN is organizing a neighborly Precita Park cleanup party… and it’s a great opportunity to give the park some of your love.  Neighbor Demece says:

We are going to Clean Up Precita Park!

Join us this Saturday, Sept. 13 at 9:30a am. Meet in the Children’s Playground. Bring your bags, hand shovels, and rakes! Neighborly conversation and friendship provided.

Writer Chris Colin Invites You To a Curious Pop-Up Dinner in His Bernal Heights Home

colinsupper1

Bernal neighbor and celebrity journalist Chris Colin extends this unusual invitation to attend an unusual dinner party at his Bernal Heights home:

A little news, neighbors: I’m starting a restaurant! It launches Friday, Oct. 3, in Bernal. It’s going to be awesome. I’m also closing this restaurant, on Oct. 4. Please come eat at this exclusive, one-night-only affair.

I haven’t yet decided whether I’ll do this under the auspices of a site that arranges similar pop-up restaurants in people’s homes — EatWith.com for instance — or just on my own. Either way, it’ll feature 8-10 people coming to our house, and my wife and me serving our best food and drinks, plus maybe some other fun little whatnots.

We’re not chefs. We’re people who throw decent dinner parties. That’s part of the appeal for me — finding out whether regular people, who cook good food and dim the lights just so, could ever run a successful restaurant. If you’re someone who likes taking chances on weird and larky things, we’d really love to have you.

The fine print: We cannot know each other. Why? Because I’m also writing a magazine story about the experience, and will want to extract your unbiased opinions about it. This also means you’ll have to be okay with being written about, and possibly photographed. Nothing weird or TMZ’ish, I promise.

About us: I’m a writer, my wife Amy is a public radio reporter. I write about food sometimes, and Amy once co-published a magazine about meat. But mostly we’re no more involved in food than your average Bay Areans. We live in Bernal and have two kids, whom we’ll boot for the night. Duh.

Drop me a line if you’re game, or maybe game! It’ll be a fun night and you’ll meet interesting people and it’ll be a thing to remember. We hope it will be delicious, too. Worst-case scenario, well, I guess that’d be a giant meteor. That’d be just horrible.

Thanks for reading. Details below.

Saturday: Synchronized Watches Record Release Party at El Rio

SW_ElRioShow

SW_TriplePhotov2

On Saturday night, Neighbor Brianna Hughes is having a record-release party at the beloved El Rio for Synchronized Watches, her band “comprised of three friends serendipitously brought together by the common desire to challenge personal musical reflexes, the need to create art, and to quench their common thirst for good tequila.”

Neighbor Brianna writes:

I live on Crescent Ave. and love love love living in this neighborhood. My band, Synchronized Watches, is playing at El Rio Saturday night as we release our very first album, Us We Here. Local gal, local club, wanted to share our music with the ‘hood. Thanks much!

Local gal! Local club! Music for locavores! The culmination of their 2x successful Kickstarter odyssey! Saturday’s show gets underway at El Rio at 10 pm, with doors opening at 9.

Your Bernalwood editor listened to the album this morning, and I loved it!  Prediction: If you enjoy Ladytron or Metric, you’ll also definitely groove on Synchronized Watches. Give it a listen right here.

It’s that glamorous red carpet and green(isn) grass time of year, Citizens of Bernalwood! It’s time for the 2014 Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema festival! Starting TONIGHT!

In addition, BHOC co-founder Leslie Lombre wrote to Bernalwood to share these late-breaking, insidery notes:

1) We’re adding comedy for the first time to the Opening Night line-up, Thursday, 9/4. Comedian Johnny Steele will perform following an excerpt of 3 STILL STANDING, a locally produced documentary profiling three recognizable names including Steele along with Will Durst and Larry Brown through a 30-year journey. It’s especially relevant given Robin William’s recent passing.

2) We’ve added some new co-presenters for Film Crawl on Cortland, Friday, 9/5:

New
SF International Women’s Festival at Inclusions Gallery
14 Black Poppies at Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center

Returning

New “Bernal Heights Architectural Coloring Book” Celebrates 2014 Bernal Outdoor Cinema Festival

coloringcover1

Neighbor Mason Kirby is an architect who lives on Mullen and works from a cute little office on Bocana just off Cortland. A few years ago, Neighbor Mason created a fabulously clever Bernal Heights Architectural Coloring Book, which he generously shared with Bernalwood readers.

Now, just in time for the 2014 Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema festival that gets underway next week, Neighbor Mason shares a new edition of his Bernal Heights Architectural Coloring Book for wannabe Bernal architects of all ages:

We’ve created a second, collectors, edition of our Bernal Heights Architectural Coloring Book. Download away! In this new edition, we didn’t need to include any houses from Noe Valley (……hisssss……hooray!). Also, we included a moon-like reminder about the Precita Park screening of Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema (which we are helping sponsor) that will happen on Saturday September 6th at 6:30.

Download your copy of the 2014 Bernal Heights Architectural Coloring Book right here!!

Don’t have a printer? No problem! Neighbor Anne tells us where you can pick up a hard copy:

The coloring books are available at Precita Park Café, Charlie’s Café, Precita Valley Center, and the Bernal Library. In addition, we will have a stack of them at the Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema information table at Precita Park on Saturday, September 6.

Coloringgrid

Got that, kids? Sharpen your colored pencils, line up your crayons, try and stay within the lines, and don’t forget that all your pictures must conform with the Bernal Heights East Slope Design Review Guidelines. (Just kidding about that last part. Sort of.)

And meanwhile, get ready for Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema 2014, which kicks off with a gala Opening Night Party at El Rio  on Thursday night, Sept. 4.

Today at Noon: Listen to Bernalwood on Burrito Justice Radio

burritojusticeradio

Yes yes, we know… the idea of Bernalwood participating on Burrito Justice Radio is sort of like General Douglas McArthur agreeing to appear as a studio guest with Tokyo Rose. But stranger things have happened…

Today from noon to 2 pm, tune your Internet dial to Bff.fm as La Lengua’s chief agitator Burrito Justice hosts your Bernalwood editor for a mix of talk, music, local history, and seething geo-political rivalry. As Burrito Justice says, “It’s like Twitter on the radio!” (We don’t know what that means either.)

Bernalwood has been granted full diplomatic immunity to participate in the radio show, along with assurances regarding safe passage to and from the BFF.fm studios in the Mission. Just in case, I’ve also gotten a tetanus shot and purchased a Speak Conversational La Lenguan phrasebook.

Listen in today at noon on BFF.fm, and share your questions and snarky comments on the Twitter.

PS: If you’ve never heard Burrito Justice’s exclusive celebrity interview with @KarltheFog, then stop what you’re doing right now and pop it in your earholes. Guaranteed, you will never look at a fog bank rolling over Twin Peaks the same way ever again.

Attention, Bernal Artists: Send Your Submissions for the 2014 “Art in Bernal Heights” Show at Inclusions Gallery

inclusions-5

Amid all the angst, teeth-gnashing, and hair-pulling about the changes taking place in Bernal Heights, there’s one thing that about this neighborhood that has remained constant: Bernal Heights is home to a ridiculous number of incredibly talented creative people.

That’s why we’re so fortunate that Lisa Moro of the Inclusions Gallery on Cortland provides a venue for our local artists to strut their stuff. Inclusions consistently emphasizes local work, but the gallery’s annual “Art in Bernal Heights” show provides a unique opportunity for anyone and everyone in Bernal to channel their inner artiste.

Lisa just began accepting submissions for the 2014 edition of the Art in Bernal Heights show, so if you want your work to be included in it, you have until September 22 to show off your genius:

Tonight: Free Concert by the Bernal Jazz Quartet at the Library

bjq-Aug2014-small-charlie.pages

Hey cats…

Bernal neighbor and jazz daddy-o Michael Gold is spreading the word about a concert by the Bernal Jazz Quartet happening TONIGHT at 6:30 at the always-hip Bernal Heights Library:

The monthly jazz series at the Bernal Heights Library is firing back up this week.

After a two-month hiatus, the Bernal Jazz Quartet will be back in the acoustically comfy community room on Wednesday, August 12 from 6:30 to 8:30pm, performing the music of seminal jazz bassist Charlie Haden.

Charlie, who passed away last month, helped chart the course of jazz over many decades, collaborating with other giants such as Ornette Coleman and Keith Jarrett, leading his own bands large and small, and developing a distinctive, irresistible voice on the bass. His playing and his compositions are deep, honest, nostalgic, resonant, and centered on uncomplicated, engaging melodies.

To celebrate his memory, we’ll be playing two sets of all Charlie Haden.

No cover, as always. FYI, we’re at the library most second Wednesdays of the month. And this month, the Bernal Jazz Quartet consists of Michael Gold (sax), Bruno Pelletier (guitar), Chuck Bennett (bass), and Tom Hassett (drums). Tom and I are Bernal residents; Chuck and Bruno are close enough — Noe Valley.

2014treasuremap

Are you ready, Bernal Heights detritivores treasure-hunters?

It’s time to put on a comfortable pair of walking shoes, stuff your pockets with wads of petty cash, and load up the bootlegged copy of that UPS route-optimization software you downloaded from a sketchy Russian website. The 2014 Bernal Hillwide Garage Sale happens this Saturday, so it’s time to map out your plan of attack!

Neighbor and Organizer Michael Minson brings the pre-sale update:

The Bernal Heights Hillwide, quite possibly San Francisco’s largest single day neighborhood garage sale, is THIS SATURDAY, 9-August from 9a-3p.

As of today, we have 73 houses registered to sell their bric-a-brac, tschotskis, and various accouterments of homebound leisure. And we’ve raised over $1,000 for the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center in the process, too!

Sellers are encouraged to promote their sale on Craigslist as well as Twitter and Instagram using #Hillwide2014.

To check out who’s got what for sale, visit the official 2014 Hillwide Garage Sale map, bookmark it on your mobile gadget, and check your social media pages.

If anyone in Bernal hasn’t registered their house on the map and wants to make it rain cash money on Saturday, there’s still time! Register right now to get on the map.

Bernal Chefs Organizing Tasty Taco Pop-Up

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

Neighbor Jasper is organizing a pop-up evening of tasty taco madness. The event happens on Friday, August 22, but reservations are being accepted now (and are expected to sell out). Neighbor Jasper tells Bernalwood:

I will be hosting the second incarnation of a pop-up dinner in Bernal Heights on Friday, August 22nd.  I am a Bernal resident – currently living just off of Cortland – and I would love for community members to join for the evening.

The first event was a few months ago in lower Pac Heights, and this time around we have secured a space in Bernal for our dinner. It’s a single seating of 40 guests for a multi-course meal at $65.

Here’s some additional detail, from the Tacos Gringas website:

All tacos are good tacos. The worst you’ve ever had was still pretty good. As the great peasant foods from around the world make their way into and out of the spotlight, tacos – and more generally, antojitos – remain an unmovable staple. Simplicity collides with incredible flavors. Modest cuts braised until they become treasures pair with bright herbs and cutting salsas inside humble corn tortillas.

Tacos Gringas pays homage to the drunken nights when greasy mystery meats satisfied a primal craving, and every leaf of cilantro and piece of onion made perfect sense even to the most intoxicated. Ironically, real tacos gringas don’t make sense at all. A flour tortilla stuffed with al pastor and slathered in melted cheese is the bastardized, yet delicious version of the trompo classic slung on the streets of Mexico City.

Tacos Gringas is just that. A delicious re-imagination of traditional flavors. Nothing fancy. Just good ingredients, thoughtfully combined, and expertly cooked.

Reservations are required; make your reservation right here.

Saturday: Band Called “View From Bernal Hill” Is Not From Bernal Heights, But Will Perform Near Bernal Hill

viewfrombernalhill

theviewfrombernalhillband

The View from Bernal Hill is a “chamber-flavored jazz” group that used to be called the Camille Mai Trio, until recently, when they decided to change their name to “The View from Bernal Hill.”

This is confusing, because the musicians in The View from Bernal Hill do not live in Bernal Heights — they just think we’re rather sexy and inspiring.

Band member Camille Mai tells Bernalwood:

Well, we don’t live in Bernal, but I had an out of body experience for the first time while on that hill.. and Fred, who shoots our videos, lives there, so I spend a lot of time over there editing video and going to progressive grounds 🙂 We actually just shot a music video on the hill too! It’s such a truly amazing place…

Still confused? Don’t worry, it’s not you — it’s just confusing. But so what. Let’s just roll with it. Because we’re famous like that, and we do this to people. Especially creative-types.

Anyway, The View from Bernal Hill will perform at 7:30 pm on Saturday, July 26 at the Red Poppy Art House (2698 Folsom at 23rd) — which also is not in Bernal Heights, although it is, admittedly, sort of nearby.

In the meantime, you can also listen to this beautiful song, which was originally recorded by the Camille Mai Trio but is now performed by The View from Bernal Hill, which is the same thing, only different and a little more confusing. Plus, there’s a Bernal name-check at around 02:16…
