Sexy Bernal Sweatshirt Hoodies For Sale to Support Final Phase of Library Art Project

The Bernal Library Art Project is entering its final phase.

After all the controversy, and the delicate mediation, and the hard-earned consensus, and the installation of new artwork on the library’s Cortland and Moultrie facades, work is now underway to complete the art on the rear, playground-facing side of the library. Scaffolding is up, and artist Johanna Poethig is working on her clever tile mosaic/mural, which incorporates vintage photographs shared by Bernal neighbors. (You can see some in-progress snaps above.)

All that remains is just a little more fundraising. And for that, the esteemed Bernalese who have spearheaded the Library Art Project invite you to purchase one of their rather fashionable sweatshirt hoodies, each of which includes a cameo by Bernal’s own celebrity icon, Sutrito Tower:

arthoodie

Here’s the pitch from the Library Art Project team:

Phase 2 of the Bernal Library Art Project is scheduled for completion this fall. Scaffolding is up on the back of the library to paint and prepare the wall for installation of the amazing glass and ceramic tile mural that Johanna Poethig has designed for this space.

So, even though the mural is going up, the funding is not complete. Our current, and perhaps final, fund raising effort is this terrific Bernal Heights sweatshirt hoodie. Please note:

  • The copyrighted image by Reuben Rude will not be duplicated in the future!
  • Supplies are limited!
  • They are available in sizes from XL to XS.
  • Hoodies are for purchase at Heartfelt for $45
  • All proceeds above cost support Phase 2 of the Bernal Lilbrary Art Project.

Although lightweight, it’s warm and super comfy and looks really cool. Don’t wait or you may miss the opportunity to own this Bernal Heights collectible!

Saturday: Celebrate Neighbor Aaron Zube’s New Paintings at Inclusions Gallery

Bocana II

Last February, Bernal Neighbor and painter extraordinaire Aaron Zube told us he was working on a new collection of Bernal Heights paintings for an upcoming show at the fabulous Inclusions Gallery on Cortland. Now he writes to say the show is live, and there’s a celebrity-soaked opening reception happening this weekend. Oh, and you’re invited!

I just wanted to invite Bernalwood readers who may be interested to my show of Bernal Heights paintings at Inclusions Gallery. The opening reception is tomorrow from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and all are welcome. I’ll be showing work with Sarah Newton who does some terrific drawings & etchings. I’ve attached images of a couple of paintings that will be included in the show. The show runs until August 24th — hope you have a chance to stop by & take a look!

  • Also, after its brief transformation, the former Liberty Cafe will reopen in time for the stroll. Now renamed Bernal Star, the new motto is “Brunch. Burgers. Brews.” Drama!
  • Miss Karen from The New Wheel adds, “We have new t-shirts! They were designed by Jennifer Keith on the North Side, printed by Pelican Print Shop down on Bayshore, and will be available in adult and kids sizes (medium and large) tomorrow near the library for just $10! Bernal Neighbor, Now Studying in Barcelona, Creates Rather Intense Robot-Enhanced Dance Video

hexisimg

Neighbor Carmen is from Bernal Heights, but she’s now finishing up a grad program in glamorous Barcelona, Spain, where she just produced a rather intensely lovely video piece. “I’m a Bocana kid, missing SF, wanting my neighbors to see what we Bernalites are capable of,” she said in her email to us.

Amen to that. Here are Neighbor Carmen’s technical notes:

This is my last project at IAAC, in Barcelona. Our school has a digital fabrication laboratory, and one of our tools is a 6 axis Kuka Robot. My latest research has been focused on exploring the aesthetic dimension of robotic movement. Since I’m studying interaction design, and using technology to augment the human experience I created a dance piece that allows us to question the rigid definition of what is human and what is machine as well as how we interact with the machines we use.

The simple run down:

In order to do this, I built a symbol movement language, based on traditional movements such as a circle, rotation, curve, wave, extension, contraction, line, meander. A sequence of moves were put together to create a visual choreography that I gave to the dancer. I then asked her to interpret it, intuitively with her body or through the space. The same sequence was given to the robot through code, and the kuka moved along that path in space the orientation of its tool moved along the path. This process makes the input parameters the same for both beings yielding spontaneous results. Without knowing the outcome, and being able to change the choreography and dancer I was looking for spontaneous connections between the two.

Tonight: Glamorous Art Opening Party at Cafe St. Jorge

PRETTY-HEAVYFINALFLYER

Andrea de Francisco, founder of the fabulous and transformative Cafe St. Jorge on Mission near Cortand, invites one and all to an art opening happening at the cafe tonight:

THE SHOW: PRETTY/HEAVY

PRETTY/HEAVY explores themes of weight, texture, pattern, perspective and geometry. With common interests in materials both natural and man-made ranging from crystals to carpet padding, each artist illustrates her own personal juxtaposition of form and content…negative/positive, crystalline/concrete…

PRETTY/HEAVY.

Famed guest 60’s inspired DJ TYLAWAVE will be spinning Motown, Surf Rock, Doo-wop and 60’s Soul all on 45s all night. Find her on the regular spinning at neighboring bar, El Amigo, the last Sunday of every month.

OPENING: FRIDAY, MAY 30TH // 7-9PM
SHOWING: MAY 30 – AUGUST 14
WHERE: CAFE ST. JORGE // 3438 MISSION STREET

THE ARTISTS: Valicia Byrne and Alex Steele

Valicia Byrne is a mixed media artist currently living in San Francisco. She received a BFA in Studio Art from San Francisco State University with emphasis in painting, printmaking and book arts. Byrne uses photomechanical reproduction to manipulate images of both natural and cosmic origin. Her accumulation of miscellaneous matter and application of geometric aesthetics to an array of organic textures create both balanced and chaotic compositions.

Alex Steele is a multidisciplinary artist currently living in San Francisco. She received her BFA from The San Francisco Art Institute. Steele’s work applies traditional collage methods to both paper as well as an array of hand dyed textiles. By exploring themes of construction and deconstruction, Steele creates landscapes featuring natural imagery within rigid man-made templates. Her “collages” border on minimal, but illustrate a different kind of depth.

Watercolors of Bernal Heights by Neighbor Jessie Schlenker

schlenker2

schlenker1

Neighbor Jessie Schlenker has been doing some terrific Bernal Heights watercolors lately, and one of his pieces is now on display at the stylish Bernal Heights Library. Jessie tells Bernalwood:

I am a resident of Bernal, and like many, I’m head over heels in love with it.

My artistic relationship with San Francisco began the first time I visited the city on a family vacation. I grew up in suburbia, with its infinite varieties of the color beige, where navy blue and avocado were splashes of color. San Francisco was nourishment to this color-starved child. The variety and richness of the colors, languages, smells and the dense, visual texture of the city delighted my young mind.

The city during the hour of twilight is the focus of my work. As John Steinbeck so wonderfully puts it, “It’s the hour of the pearl. The interval between day and night when time stops and examines itself.”

The “hour of the pearl” is pure magic. The city and all her inhabitants start to relax into the evening. The sky is illuminated with fires of deep blue and turquoise while the city windows, cars, buses, bridges and streetlights glow with their own warmth. I become enchanted and feel compelled to capture that elusive light with the medium of watercolors.

My latest work is on display at the Bernal Library. it’s a painting of the corner at 18th and mission. Sorry, no photo of it yet.

It’s on display at the library because i’m part of the Russeller Watercolor Society that meets in their community room every other Friday from 1-5pm. I’m one of the organizers of the group. We have several wonderful watercolorists from the hill join us. Laurie Wigham paints with us, as you might remember.

Tonight: Opening Reception for Bernal Artist’s Home Paintings

Neighbor Lauren is a renter who lives (for now — gulp!) in the “iPad House,” the secret home on Perhalta near US101 that has been hidden behind a giant billboard since the dawn of freeway history:

She is also a photographer, and a painter, and a dog-owner, and in a glamorous new show that’s opening downtown tonight, she brings all these threads together:

I’m Lauren Elizabeth, an artist hailing from Alemanistan. I live in the secret iPad house, which is sadly up for sale (my partner and I rent, so the prognosis is not good). Naturally this has me very sad, because now that Bernal is the hottest place in the world, I fear we will have a hard time staying in the neighborhood, let alone San Francisco (we have four dogs – enough said).

Sob story aside, this has motivated me to take lots of photos of bernal houses on my walks, so I can remember the greatest place I’ve ever lived if the time comes to leave. These photos later translated into paintings, which will be on display at Hotel Rex (562 Sutter). The opening reception is Thursday, May 1 from 630 – 8pm. Also, 15% of the proceeds will benefit NorCal Family Dog Rescue.

Here’s my Artist Statement:

Home

A house is a painting. an extension of one’s self. It represents memories of the past, dreams of the future, and place in the present. It is what we make it.

A home is where the painting hangs. The space in our soul that gives it meaning and purpose. The vessel that holds our most beloved memories. We are the creators.

And at the creator’s feet, canine. reflection. The one animal humans have learned to simply walk with. They expand our world to create something greater than ourselves. They know no boundaries, and they claim without shame. Here I am! And there I was! With a dog, the world is our home.

Much love to Family Dog Rescue, and their mantra “a dog makes a house a home.” These paintings were created with my two family dogs at my side, and the inspiration came from our many walks together.

Let us each explore and create our most colorful worlds. preferably with a dog at our feet.

Easter Bunny Leaves Chalk Art Outside Bernal Homes

bunnycar1

The Easter Bunny left us a cool present on Sunday morning, sometime between the time when I grabbed the newspaper after waking up and when I walked outside a short while later to run an errand.

The gift arrived in the form of a fun chalk drawing on the street in front of the driveway I share with my next door neighbors. The image showed a secret agent driving a custom Easter Bunny Egg car, and the details were rather wonderful.

Thank you Easter Bunny!! Very much appreciated.
