Ski Bernalwood: Snow Report and New Upgrades

Hello Skiers and Snowboarders!

Thanks to all of you who bought a 2012 Ski Bernalwood season pass. As you know, your 2012 Ski Bernalwood season pass allows you to take unlimited advantage of Ski Bernalwood’s extensive lift and trail network anytime during normal operating hours. Thanks for helping to make Ski Bernalwood San Francisco’s premier wintersports resort destination.

We’ve made several exciting improvements for the 2012 season:

NEW TRAILS:

On the north face, we’ve opened up more advanced terrain for more adrenaline-powered ski and snowboarding excitement. The new run is called Stoney Grotto, and it’s accessible from either of Ski Bernalwood’s high-speed chairlifts via the eastern side of the Sutrito Summit Lodge complex.

NEW TERRAIN PARK:

On the southeastern slope, we’ve created Haunted House, a new terrain park equipped with epic tabletop jumps, steep jibs, and a full half-pipe.  Stow your tray table, fasten your seatbelt, and bring your seat to the full upright position, because there will be some Very. Big. Air. happening at the new Haunted House park.

NEW DINING OPTIONS:

We’re proud to welcome several new food vendors to the Sutrito Summit Lodge, to satisfy your hunger during an exciting day on the slopes. Inside, look for the new Pasta Bar operated by Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack, as well as hearty, seasonal fare offered at the Bernal Supper Club Cafe. In a hurry? Grab some tasty pastries from the Sandbox Bakery cart, located on the South Patio. Apres ski, have a cocktail with bartenders from the Royal Cuckoo as they mix it up for you and your pals.

NEW DOGGIE DAY CARE AND FITNESS CLASSES:


You asked for it, and we got it! Last year, dozens of Ski Bernalwood passholders asked us to provide a safe place to drop-off their doggies before heading out to the slopes. This year, FitBernalFit will offer doggie day care during our regular lift-operation hours, with Iditerod Fitness Classes offered for your dog daily at 11 am and 2 pm. The FitBernalFit drop-off area is located at the base of the Vista Pointe Lift.

SNOW REPORT
So many exciting new things. But let’s not forget the most exciting news of all: As you may have heard, Winter 2012 is getting off to a historically dry start in Lake Tahoe. As our friends at Squaw Valley put it last week:

Tahoe is really not looking good, humans. It literally hasn’t snowed yet this winter. I know that we all need to hold onto the hopeful idea that one big storm could change everything, but that one big storm is not on the horizon. There is nothing in the two week forecast, again. We are looking at nothing until at least mid-January…or later. I want to be optimistic, but we have to look at the numbers.

Fortunately, we have no such problems here in Bernal Heights. After the epic snowfall last week, followed by the bluebird skies last weekend, conditions at Ski Bernalwood have never been better. We’ve got at 48″ base with powder or packed powder on 100 percent of our trails, and the forecast calls for continued sun and fun throughout the week.

  1. There’s something very compelling about the lodge/cafe at the top of the hill, snow or no snow, instead of that strange military-esque bunker we have now. Does anyone else think it goes 30 stories underground and transmits coded information to other secret bunkers in Nevada? Or is that just me?

  2. Gale, I like your theory about the bunker.

    Todd, thanks for the update about conditions at the Bernalwood Resort. One thing I was very impressed by was the complete snow removal on Bernalwood streets. Our tax dollars at work, ladies and gentlemen. I’m a bit concerned, however, that the Helipad may be buried under the record snowfall, judging by the aerial resort photo. Please advise.

    • It’s true. SFDPW has really done a great job with snow removal this year. Bravo!

      I do believe the helipad is snowed-under, which is really too bad because the heliskiing off Mt. San Bruno would be great this year.

      • This is neighbor Regina reporting live from the helipad. We’re using the towering takeoff technique to ensure safe landings in re-circulating snow. We use this same technique to land in the copious amount of leaves produced by the tree the city refuses to come out and trim. Over and out.

  10. season passes can be bought at a discount using BernalBucks. and, yes the eugenia steps are sidecountry but completely off-piste. We skied all the way down the Prentiss coulior headwall to the wine bar on cortland last night and hung at the bonfire of the vanaties.

      • in all seriosity, i actually run the trails up there several mornings a week. part of that loop includes a fun downclimb down the escarpment that drops out right by the maze/gazebo. I’ve often wondered why folks dont ride old snoboards down the fine scree. w/ body armour of course.

        this was a fun exchange about our skibernal! my east coast friends were fooled!

  11. I’d love it if Ski Bernalwood would offer some kind of membership cross-promotion with the Mission Equestrian Center, set on 100 rolling acres immediately behind the Stables Cafe on Folsom.

  13. the underground facility true enough, as Frederic Grassett and I discovered a no-longer used side tunnel a few years back when we were digging the Andover-Bonview underground narrow gauge miniature railroad tunnel. As far as the skiing, having the lodge on top of the hill really hits the spot after a long day on the slopes. Also, the hot chocolates there are unsurpassed.

  14. Was it folly, or will the skating rink indeed be built for us non-skiing, local SF Kristi Yamaguchi types? Because I realize the underground spring up there at Ski Bernalwood makes it SOOOO easy for nice smooth ice. Now if only the Siberian Huskies wouldn’t be so skittish around the Zamboni. (isn’t it such fun to say ZAMBONI!) Italiano..no?

  17. You all are kidding, right? Every day for 22 years I have carried my wooden cross country skis, wax and blowtorch up the hill and have NEVER found the snow of which you all speak. Those pictures are fakes from that photospylab up there aren’t they? I know the rope tow has been out of service for some time now since Mayor Brown had his new suit frayed when he slipped on his way up to christen the old sauna and baths. It was pretty funny but he was pissed and got Tony Hall to cancel all of those great Friday night choral recitals in the bath house. And we all know how the plans for the new Quickly franchise went south with Ed Jew.
    But I digress. Please stop using this forum to play jokes on me. It snow fun being mocked.

The ski jump that jettisons folks down here to a graceful landing on the giant in-ground air pillow at Precita Park, where they can choose to refresh at one of our local cafes, has for the most part been quite entertaining…except that one unfortunate fellow who missed and skidded through one of the piles of dog poop.

    Seriously {if that’s possible}…thank you for spending all the time – in which you otherwise would have been up in Tahoe in a good ski year – creating this very appealing vision and bringing us along for the ride!

    • Dude, appears you may not have gotten up there today. there is 3′ of fresh and it’s untracked in the Prentiss coulior. the ski patrol was doing avy control with some firecrackers at daybreak. go shred, dude!!

  24. ok–, time for the BERNALTOWN movie by Gregory Gavin to go livestreaming or at least be transferred to DVD for mass distribution and rediscovery. I wonder if Bernalwood can figure this out as a way to honor it’s elders as this ski thing has really skewed our casino plans for top o’ the hill. The new Bernal affluency and it’s well remunerated creative class is now able to make the snow fall. Jeez, we soon-to-be oldtimer artists could only make the native plants resprout and provide steep paths for training Sandinistas.

    • Amy, YES! I’ve had the same thought. We need a digitized Bernaltown! Nothing would make me happier than to honor the film — it was glamorous before Bernal glam was cool.
