Be Advised: The Woman On Bernal Hill With Her Head in a Bucket of Water Has It Totally Under Control

getsmessy

Neighbor Sydney from Moultrie Street wishes to reassure all Citizens of Bernalwood that you should not be concerned on Saturday morning if you happen to see a woman dunking her head in a bucket of water on Bernal Hill. It’s all just part of the program:

A friend and colleague of mine from Stanford (we’re both graduate students getting our PhDs – me in Art History, she in Performance studies) is going to be performing an hour-long score in Bernal Heights park this weekend. Here’s the scoop:

Don’t be alarmed on Saturday morning if you see a woman with her head in a bucket of water on the paved road in Bernal Heights Park at around 10 am. Raegan Truax, a NY-based performance artist who relocated to the Bay Area to get her PhD at Stanford, will be performing Weight, an hour-long piece that explores the effects of gravity on and around the body.

Weight is one of 6 scores in a larger durational piece called If This Gets Messy. From Tuesday Apr 23-Sunday Apr 28, Raegan is performing 1 hour-long score per day, culminating in a 28-hour long performance that cycles through these six scores in Piggott Theater on Stanford’s campus, starting at 3pm on Monday Apr 29.

All parts of If This Gets Messy are free and open to the public.

More information on her website.

Thursday: A Community Meeting to Discuss Bernal Infrastructure Projects

A meeting will happen Thursday, April 25 at Leonard Flynn School at 6 pm  to share information about several major infrastructure projects happening in Bernal Heights — including the  Cesar Chavez greenification effort (now that the sewer replacement project is complete):

The San Francisco Department of Public Works (DPW) and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) would like to invite you to attend an upcoming community meeting to discuss the ongoing Cesar Chavez Sewer & Streetscape Improvement Project as well as other projects under construction in the Mission and Bernal Heights neighborhoods. We plan to also provide details about additional DPW/PUC led projects that will be “coming soon” to Bernal Heights and the Mission.

Tonight: Artist Talk with Painter April Hankins at Inclusions

AprilHankins

Another late-breaking event for your Bernal Heights lifestyle: Tonight, Thursday 4/4 at 7:00 pm, Inclusions Gallery on Cortland will host an artist talk with San Francisco painter April Hankins:

April Hankins’ abstract work is spontaneous, strong in color, and adventurous in mark and gesture. Her paintings evoke a distinct sense of place, tangentially referencing locale with an evolved and complex palette.

Prior to receiving her BFA from Massachusetts College of Art, April Hankins took time from studio practice to initiate and direct the Boston exhibition of Judy Chicago’s “The Dinner Party,” now permanently housed at the Brooklyn Museum.

For her work in the Yale School of Art MFA program, Hankins was awarded the Ely Harwood Schless Memorial Prize for excellence in painting. Subsequently, she has been twice nominated for an award in painting by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Hankins work is in the museum collections of Yale and Harvard Universities, as well as the print collection of The New York Public Library. Her paintings are in the corporate collections of Pfizer, Inc., and most recently, Host Marriott.

Invited by Le Genie de la Bastille Parisian, Hankins traveled to Paris with a selection of paintings to participate in the collective’s open studios. Upon returning she used photographs taken during her three- week visit to create abstract collages capturing the uniquely beautiful light of Paris.

Through Isha yoga Hankins has learned meditation and traveled twice to South India for intensive practice. The artist observes that meditation increases her awareness of a quiet distancing from thought and perception, in striking contrast to an isolating sense of self, adding an intrinsic dimensionality to her work.

Having lived and worked in San Francisco for over a decade, Hankins’ painting reflects Northern California’s distinctive light and color. Frequent travel provides a contrast of density and mood, further informing her work. Hankins’ process of painting accommodates an altered sense of space, and her painting has become direct, unpredictable and surprising.

If you miss the talk tonight, the show runs at Inclusions until April 28.

A single year is tiny compared to the sweeping backdrop of geological history. Yet for the cocktailicious Rock Bar on 29th and Tiffany in the La Lengua Autonomous Zone, one year has been a lifetime.

Rock Bar manager Brion invites one and all to drink up during the Rock Bar’s First Anniversary Party, happening tomorrow, Thursday, March 21, from 6 pm to 2 am:

Join in celebrating Rock Bar’s first year with a revival of their famous punch ($6 special) celebrating their beloved Henry the Donkey. The Rock Bar crew will be launching their new Spring Cocktail Menu at the party (just in time for the Spring Equinox), and reviving favorite cocktails from previous menus — like The Dark Crystal, ICHI Rock, and The Real Thunderberg. The Aquarius Records-curated jukebox will be taking the evening off to make way for an exclusive set from INTERNET FAMOUS.

Friday Night: Raise a Glass with Karen at the Stray Bar’s Glorious Goodbye Party

straybar.karen

We’ve had a few weeks now to absorb the news. We have worked our way through the Kübler-Ross Five Stages of Grief. It has not been easy. It has not been pleasant. Yet after much arduous struggle and introspection, we have reached the final level: Acceptance.

Now it’s time for a last hurrah.

The Stray Bar on Cortland will close for good on Saturday morning very soon, but on Friday night owner Karen Opp is hosting a goodbye party that will inevitably turn out to be a glorious hot mess. She writes:

Hi friends & family,

We are nearing the midnight hour, and many of you want to know when to come have your last drink or three with us – so please join us Friday March 15th for our big blast w/our Stray Bar team of — me, Gabe, Marieke, & Nadia !

All bottle beer $3 & and $3 peppermint Girl Scout cookie shots — ALL NIGHT LONG :-). Yummy food and crazy antics & your last time to buy me (Karen) a tequila shot!!! 🙂 The kick-off to Saint Patricks Days is the perfect way to send off this Irish Lass to her next adventure while she leaves behind her Stray Bar Pup for the folks of Bernal Heights to watch after…

It’s been an amazing seven years on the hill for me… I have made so many new friends and I’m so appreciative of the love and support I’ve received from this community. Stray Bar will remain under the guidance of new owners who are sure to take care of the Stray Bar Pup well….and I thank you all for your advice, your guidance, and just being damn cool and awesome customers!

Thank you,
Karen Opp/Owner – Stray Bar

Godspeed, Karen. We will miss you, and we wish you the very best… with love from Bernalwood.

TONIGHT: Celebrate The New Wheel’s One Year Anniversary

storefront-newwheel

Has it only been a year?

The New Wheel bicycle shop on Cortland is celebrating its one year anniversary tonight, but it feels like the business has been here much longer. Store owners Brett and Karen have carved out a unique niche selling futuristic electric bicycles, but the they do it with an old skool appreciation for community engagement, friendly service, and great design. Their store has been such a natural addition to Cortlandia that it feels like its been there forever.

Now Brett invites all of Bernalwood to come celebrate this evening:

I’d like to extend an invitation to our One Year Anniversary in Bernal party this Friday from 6 to 9pm. We are going to have food and drinks, along with games to win some awesome new t-shirts we’ve designed. Hope you can make it! We’ve sent out the word to our customers, friends, and acquaintances, but perhaps you could let the Bernalwood reading public know as well.

Consider yourself invited, and please do bring congratulations for Brett and Karen.

Tonight: Bernal Author Holds New Book Party (and You’re Invited)

Bachelor.Bernal

It’s harvest season for authors in Bernal Heights, with lots of fresh, locally-grown books shipping to markets from coast to coast. Neighbor Blaine tells us she a new book out too, and she’s having a little event tonight to celebrate. Bonus: You’re invited!

Like Neighbor Nathanael, I, too, have a book. 🙂 It’s called On Being a Bachelor: Thoughts on Dating, Mating and Relating, and although it’s not quite as Bernal-y as his, it’s very well-suited for Valentine’s Day. It’s a collection of my best and funniest newspaper columns from a weekly in Atlanta, where my now-husband, Neighbor Chris (whom I met while writing those columns) lived before we were Bernal-bound. Here’s a link and some more info.

This Friday marks my West Coast literary debut (!) with a signing at Jurlique Spa, on Fillmore Street, with free wine and snacks. Details below:

What: Wine Tasting and Book Signing: On Being a Bachelor: Thoughts on Dating, Mating and Relating, by San Francisco-based author and journalist Blane Bachelor
Where: Jurlique Spa, 2136 Fillmore St., at Sacramento
When: Fri., Feb. 8, 2013; 6-8 p.m.
Etc: Complimentary wine and bites provided

Sunday: Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Will Hand Out Free Safety Whistles

acmewhistle

Some neighborhoods are protected by the Guardian Angels; Bernal Heights has the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. We’re lucky like that.

On Sunday, February 3 from 1-2 pm, The Sisters will be on Cortland and Andover, handing out whistles and dispensing street-smart safety advice in front of the Good Life Grocery. In case you miss them, The Sisters will leave any extra whistles at Chuck’s corner store, on Cortland at Bocana.

Once you have a sporty personal-safety whistle, here’s how The Sisters suggest you use it:

Attach your whistle to your keychain, phone or bag, choosing something that you always have with you so you can easily access your whistle if a threatening situation arises. If you are walking to your car late at night with your keys in hand and a whistle attached, you can blow into the whistle to startle an attacker and attract help.

Get your whistle ready if you sense danger. Use it if you think a sudden noise may distract an attacker or attract help. If you are already under attack, use your judgement about whether the whistle will help or hurt your situation. If you see someone in trouble, blow your whistle to distract the perpetrator, giving the victim time to escape.

Call 9-1-1 when someone else is in danger.

Blow in short, sharp bursts: 3 tweets (over and over) for “SOS”.

If you don’t have your whistle consider yelling “FIRE”. That seems to attract attention, whereas yelling “help” seems to repel people from coming to your aid.
