Bernal Author Releases New Book, Does Glamorous Interviews

You heard about it here first (natch), but Bernal Heights author and Bernalwood contributor Elizabeth Weil’s new book, “No Cheating, No Dying,” is now available for sale at a bookstore near you.

In between, Liz has been engaged in an open relationship with the traditional media to help spread the word about the book. Let’s review some highlights.

She counseled 7×7 magazine:

Of course all couples are different, but what would you say are the most essential ingredients for a good marriage?
You have to like each other … and keep liking each other every day. And you have to remember that your spouse isn’t nearly as predictable as you think he or she is.

The San Francisco Chronicle said:

In “No Cheating, No Dying,” her astonishingly intimate, hilariously self-deprecating, vibrant and thoroughly modern memoir, San Francisco author Elizabeth Weil goes where no man and few women have gone before – deep, deep, deep into the quotidian agonies and ecstasies of a highly volatile yet solidly committed marriage.

In Slate, Liz said:

Slate: What was the most useful thing you learned from the marriage improvement project?
Weil: Our marriage is our marriage, and we need to have the best marriage for us. With a wedding, you sort of start down this road, from this more collective fantasy. But then ultimately there you are with the person you love in your little house, and you need to build the life that’s right for you.

Urban Outfitters Uses Bernal Hill for Glamorous Catalog Shoot

OMG! Since everyone knows that everyone in Bernalwood is totally glamorous and maniacally style-obsessed, we’re quite sure everyone in Bernal Heights is eagerly awaiting the arrival of their February 2012 Urban Outfitters catalog!

When you open up your catalog, you’ll immediately notice that UO used Bernal Heights as the setting for a few of their super-chic fashion spreads:

I love how Urban Outfitters used totally typical Bernal residents as supermodels. And in terms of the clothes themselves, they completely nailed the way we actually dress here. (Sh*t Bernalites Say: “Honey, does this $54 plaid shirt coordinate well with my $85 suede moccasins?”)

Thoughfully, Urban Outfitters even included a sexxxy shot that will likely to appeal to certain Sutro Tower-loving separatists who reside in the La Lengua Autonomous Zone.

Thanks to reader Oliver for bringing this to our attention.

UPDATE: Look what arrived in Neighbor Regina’s mailbox today!

There’s also this “making of” video that shows in-progress footage of the catalog shoot. If you enjoy seeing models get paid to look blasé and very bored, you’ll LOVE this. The Bernal footage kicks in at around 0:26…

Star Sighting: Tom Ammiano at the Good Life Meat Counter

High-profile Democratic politicians? They’re just like us!

Bernalwood had a celebrity encounter with our very own Man in Sacramento last weekend, and here’s our full report:

Who: State Assemblyman Tom Ammiano
Where: Meat counter, Good Life Grocery, Bernal Heights
What He Bought: About 2 lbs. of steak. Good Life staff hinted that it was filet mignon.
What He Was Wearing: A sporty brown leather jacket. Looked Italian-made.
How He Looked: Glam. Slightly Hollwood. Tanned, rested, and out on the town. Is it just us, or is Tom Ammiano beginning to resemble the circa 1994 Tony Bennett?

House Portrait: Carlos Santana’s House on Mullen

Santana House

Santana House

The Mission District usually gets the credit for having been home to Carlos Santana, but the truth of the matter is that Santana commuted to the Mission from Bernal Heights.

Specifically, according to longtime Bernal resident Peter Wiley, Santana lived in this house on Mullen Avenue. Here’s how Neighbor Peter guided me to it:

The house is on the north side of Mullen just east of the Franconia steps. There is a Franconia cul de sac that runs south from Mullen just east of the bend as you drive up (east) Mullen from Franconia. The first house to the east of the steps is an old storefront. The second house is a shingled cottage. Maybe not shingled. That’s the one. It is flanked to the east by a cottage that is set back from the street.

Neighbor Peter confirmed to Bernalwood that the home shown here was indeed the Santana House. Carlos, if you’re out there… care to chime in???

Bernal Bikini Jogger Immortalized in Street Stencils

Our beloved Bikini Jogger enjoys a legendary reputation, and now her aura shines even brighter, thanks to some street art stencils that pay homage to her famous fitness technique.

Bluepearlgirl spotted the stencils around Bernalwood:

So this had me in stitches!  I thought it was just great. Our elusive Yeti on pavement!  I stopped in at Chuck’s to get a soda, and then continued on up to Holly Park.  When my friend and i got to the top of the stairs, I couldn’t believe it!!  There she was again!  Our Bikini jogger, immortalized again in paint.
