The PTA at Leonard R. Flynn Elementary School on Precita Park is having their annual fundraiser tomorrow, Saturday March 15. Neighbor Jeff extends the invitation:
This Saturday night the Leonard R. Flynn PTA will be hosting its 3rd annual “Viva la Noche” fundraiser with music, hors d’oeuvres, wine, and a silent auction.
Bid on all manner of Bernal local favorites and food, gift certificates, vacations, wine, massages, and more!
Saturday, March 15, 2014 7:00pm until 11:00pm

About the PTA and the School:
Flynn is the elementary school that borders on Precita Park. We serve close to 500 students from Kindergarten to 5th grade in both Spanish immersion and English language programs.The mission of our school is to promote excellence in education and create a nurturing learning environment for our students. Over 65% of our students come from low-income families who qualify for free or reduced cost breakfast and lunch.
Donations to the PTA fund the programs that the district is not able to provide — things that many of us would consider essentials for a decent education for our kids:
* Physical Education – a program from Playworks that promotes physical health and social development
* Sciences – programs in partnership with Mission High School, plus gardening, and water conservation

ATTENTION ALL NEWLY ARRIVED/YOUNG/RICH BERNAL TECH WORKERS: This is a great opportunity to spend some of your dough and help your neighborhood school. Kindergarten may not yet be on your radar, but now is the time to invest in your future. Plus it is going to be a fun event. And as long as you spend freely on the silent auction, you will be welcomed with open arms!
So, in other words, “cough it up or we will hate you?”
Nope. Sarcastic, but genuine outreach to our new neighbors! Flynn is Bernalwood’s public elementary school and we should all do as much as we can to make it as good as the neighborhood that it serves.

I just love the native species mural along C. Chavez; it makes me happy every time I walk past LR Flynn.
I remember Mr. Flynn from the 1960’s. He was there when the school was called Le Conte. I myself, like a lot of neighborhood kids, went to Le Conte for kindergarten because the then two Catholic schools in the neighborhood did not have kindergartens. What I remember about Mr. Flynn was kids always in the yard calling, “Mr. Flynn ! Mr. Flynn !” And, Mr. Flynn himself was very vocal, doing a lot of shouting himself, to break up rowdiness in the school yard. It seems like every time I walked by there, Mr. Flynn was surrounded by kids and in the thick of it. And who knew ? All those years, all that shouting–they named the school after him ! Well, he must have been very dedicated to that school during a time–the turbulent 1960’s–when it was especially difficult to be a teacher because the kids were affected by all the social change movements active then. A teacher had to teach during race riots, political protest marches, assassinations of major government leaders, etc. Not an easy time to be a teacher or a student, and, as I look back, I wonder how any of us got through it . . .
