Has it only been a year?
The New Wheel bicycle shop on Cortland is celebrating its one year anniversary tonight, but it feels like the business has been here much longer. Store owners Brett and Karen have carved out a unique niche selling futuristic electric bicycles, but the they do it with an old skool appreciation for community engagement, friendly service, and great design. Their store has been such a natural addition to Cortlandia that it feels like its been there forever.
Now Brett invites all of Bernalwood to come celebrate this evening:
I’d like to extend an invitation to our One Year Anniversary in Bernal party this Friday from 6 to 9pm. We are going to have food and drinks, along with games to win some awesome new t-shirts we’ve designed. Hope you can make it! We’ve sent out the word to our customers, friends, and acquaintances, but perhaps you could let the Bernalwood reading public know as well.
Consider yourself invited, and please do bring congratulations for Brett and Karen.

What happened to their gas pump?
I was wondering the same thing, and was going to comment the same question. I hope some idiot didn’t vandalize it.
What a well kept store ! Love the colors of the building and how clean they keep it ! Wish more stores on Cortland Ave kept there business this nice looking ! Congrats on your one year !
It does look so nice. Part of me likes the rag-tag look of Cortland, but there sure are a few places that could use a little sprucing up.
Congrats to them, but still scratching my head on how this place still in business!?!? #puzzled
I’m told it’s thriving. Basically, New Wheel is the only dedicated electric bike shop in the Bay Area, so they do a tidy business locally, with a lot of magnet customers from outside the city.
Off topic, but along the lines of JayJay’s comment. I wonder if there would be any interest in a spruce-it-up weekend among us Bernalites. I have thought of this frequently when I bring my kids to classes at the rec center. It always feels so run-down and to be honest, a little filthy. I wonder if would be possible to organize a day of service in Bernal – where we cleaned the toys at the rec center, washed windows on Cortland, power washed awnings (?), helped paint, planted flowers, etc…? Too much? We did a day like this at the school where I used to teach and it was such an awesome way to connect with people and build a stronger community.
I would love to do this. Perhaps start small by focusing on just one block a week? (Meanwhile, as my leadership drive and commitment level are admittedly sub-par, I will pick up as much trash as I can whenever I set foot on Cortland.)
I am not sure the best way to proceed or how to even get started. I will do some thinking in the next two weeks about how to try to organize this. I think doing a day of general clean-up might be the most sure-fire way to get people to commit vs doing a block one week at a time. However, if it was a positive enough experience I think we could potentially organize a round two that could do that.
The charging station is one of the nicest things to appear in the n’hood — thanks, good TNW folk!
Congrats, Brett and Karen!
electric bikes are like meth for people who want to stay up or need help getting up, cheaters.. . ride yo as up the hill.
