7×7’s Jessica Battilana has showered love upon Bernal’s own Ichi Sushi. Located in the Mission Street storefront previously occupied by Yo’s Sushi Club, Ichi is the brainchild of gaijin sushi sensei Tim Archuleta, who formerly ran the Lucky Cat Japanese deli on Cortland. Archuleta gave Ichi’s interior a major upgrade, and the foodies have taken notice:
Archuleta is clearly comfortable in these environs, where he turns out the usual—sashimi, nigiri, and specialty rolls—with skill. Flank your raw fish with some of the other offerings, such as a Japanese cucumber salad dressed with miso or the cold soba with shiso pesto. There’s sake and Sapporo, naturally, but I glimpsed a couple of cases of Pabst Blue Ribbon tallboys in the back room. It’s not on the menu, but if you ask—and offer to buy one for the chef—I have a feeling he’d oblige.

bleargh! Why would I want to sully my palate with terrible, terrible beer before/during/after delicious Sushi? (Or, for that matter, EVER?!)
Good point, especially when they have so much great sake!
Great small batch sakes. Freshest fish that benefit from simple preparation. We had a rather indulgent evening there.
I’m going to have to check it out. I was feeling a little disgruntled about their re-vamp of Yo’s, because one thing they did was strip off the gorgeous (if decayed) plasterwork that was outside it.
Just checked it out. Awesome.
My wife and I sat at the sushi bar last week and just asked Tim to feed us whatever he felt like. We were treated to a parade of nigiri that just knocked our socks off — fresh, generous portions, with unusual taste combinations subtle enough to let the fish shine. Please treat yourself to this experience!
BTW, Tim still runs the Lucky Cat Deli, under the stewardship of Taka, a sushi master in his own right.
