Saturday: Celebrate Earth Day With the Kids at Paul Revere School

Neighbor Marcia brings word that Paul Revere School in South Bernal is hosting a kid-friendly Earth Day celebration tomorrow, on Saturday, April 22. She tells Bernalwood:

Come celebrate Earth Day at Paul Revere School with our Copa Mundial on Saturday, April 22, 1-5 p.m. on the Main Building’s yard (555 Tompkins, between Folsom and Banks).

There will be food, games, and a raffle drawing for a chance to win tickets to see the San Jose Earthquakes, SF City FC, and SF Deltas. The grand prize is four park-hopper tickets to Disneyland!

There will also be a farmers market stand with seeds, plants, and veggies from our very own school garden! Proceeds to benefit our new turf field which will be open to the neighborhood on weekends this fall!

Woman Attacks 14 Year-Old Student at Paul Revere School

From SFGate:

A girl was taken to a hospital after a 30-year-old woman came to her school and punched her, police said Monday.

The woman showed up at the 14-year-old girl’s Bernal Heights school at 11 a.m. on Friday and began arguing with her before the altercation turned physical, according to the San Francisco Police Department.

The woman then allegedly pushed the girl to the ground and punched her. The altercation was broken up by school staff and the woman fled in an unknown direction, police said.

New Preschool Opening on Cortland Today

banner-sign

There’s a new preschool opening at 610 Cortland today (right next to the Wells Fargo banking robot), and it’s called Little Angels Nursery School. Neighbor Jen’s child has been attending Little Angels at another location, and she bring the 411 on the new Cortland facility:

Little Angels nursery/preschool will be opening their 610 Cortland Avenue location on January 3rd, 2017. School founder Rabab and many of the students’ families are very excited!

Little Angels will accept children aged 18 months to 6 years, and has a sister school in Sunnyside for infants. The Bernal location has two main play rooms including an invitingly cozy reading nook by the Cortland-facing windows, a new play kitchen, and enough blocks, train tracks, and Magna-tiles for everyone.

In the back, there’s a good-sized yard with a redwood playhouse and a large sandbox, all shaded by a generous avocado tree. My personal favorite thing about the school is the full kitchen: Rabab and the other teachers do fun baking projects and make tasty, healthy, homemade lunches for the children. (They got my picky kid to happily eat vegetables and soup! I can’t express how amazing that is to me.)

Bernalese grow-ups can expect to see the kids at the local library, playground, and around the neighborhood. There was an open house at Little Angels before the holiday break, and it had a ton of walk-in traffic, so I expect the school will fill up quickly — if it’s not full already. This is a great neighborhood for kids. If anyone wants to ask Rabab questions or apply, the school’s site is here.

Angry Parents Rally at Paul Revere School

Vintage Coke Sign

There’s rebellion afoot at Paul Revere School on Tompkins, with a rally that was scheduled for 8 am this morning taking place to protest the policies of the school’s principal. The SF Appeal carries the story:

Parents at a school in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood are holding a rally Thursday to call for the removal of the school’s principal for what they say are unfair regulations.

The 20 or so parents at Paul Revere School, which teaches pre-kindergarten to eighth grade students, are taking issue with principal Sheila Sammon, who is in her second year at the school.

Sammon has allegedly instituted new rules such as issuing demerits for students taking bathroom trips, said Phillip Pierce, an organizer with Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, a group that advocates for low-income and immigrant families.

Any Paul Revere families care to weigh in on the controversy? Comment away.
