This is very sad. From the SF Examiner:
Sherman Brown, 59, passed away at a hospital Tuesday, according to the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office.
Brown was badly beaten, his face covered in blood, when cops found him in the 400 block of Prentiss Street [near Cortland] just after 7 p.m.
He had gotten into a fight and was beaten until he blacked out, police said.
A witness pointed out the attacker to officers, but arresting him wasn’t easy. The suspect, 32-year-old Anthony Pacrem, allegedly swung at a cop, then began “flailing his arms around,” which caused him to lose balance and fall to the ground, police said.
Even while on the ground, the man fought off police. Cops used pepper spray to finally halt the fighting and handcuff Pacrem, police said.
Brown was rushed to the hospital. Police initially said doctors feared he had lost his right eye in the fight. Less than two months later, Brown was dead.
UPDATE:
Reader Richard Modolo weighs in with a remembrance:
Sherman and I grew up together, and in fact he and his family lived next door to our family on Prentiss Street, and my mom still lives in the same home. I remember the day Mr and Mrs. Brown, Sherman and Fred moved in next door. Sherman was about 5 years old then. Sherman was a good guy, a hard worker, and he would not hurt anyone, it is very sad.

I used to live on that block of Prentiss Street, and there was always whacky stuff going on (read: illegal). Never anything as scary as this though. I’m sure I must know who these two men are. When my son was born, I knew we had to move. There is just something wrong with that block.
😦
Adding to teri’s comments…
This is one of the two incidents on my block I referenced in my post about the community police meeting covered in this blog a couple of weeks ago.
It is truly sad that violence erupted. There is a particular house on this block that serves as shelter to, reportedly, both the attacker and the deceased, as well as a handful of other people. I keep my distance when I walk by that house — though it is too easy to judge a book by its cover in this case. This feels like a “one bad apple” situation, as one house surely drags down what is otherwise a pretty wonderful block.
I hope one day that situation resolves itself without any further injury to anyone.
Is Sherman “fritzy”, who lived in his car?
I believe not. I haven’t seen Fritzy since the incident, but the source on my block can (and I believe did) distinguish Sherman from Fritzy.
As far as I know, Fritzy is connected to the set of people who reside in that house, but I don’t know the details about how they are all connected. Sufficient to say that they are not all related to each other.
He probably ran away…Let me know if you find out.
I just found out that Fritzy is Sherman’s brother.
Hi Brent. I was thinking it was Fritz, too, because I haven’t seen him in ages. My heart is heavy for everyone on Prentiss. Stay safe.
