The Classic Wallpaper at Cancilla’s Market

As Bernalwood has noted previously, good things are happening at Cancilla’s Market at the corner of Folsom and Precita Park on the north side. The store now sells good cheese, good bread, and even good sake, and there’s even talk that the name will soon change from Cancilla’s Market to Harvest Hills. (Meh.)

Yet amid the store’s dramatic transformation from standard-issue frumpy  to gourmet-handy, there is one thing that thankfully has not changed: The campy vintage wallpaper that shows illustrated scenes of San Francisco. Classic awesomeness:

  1. Not that it’s any of my business so long as they keep on carrying Taylor’s Tonic Chai Soda Lite, but I’m so not on board with the repainting of the sign. It used to look kind of Retro-Classy (as retro as a sign with the words “ATM Inside” can be, I suppose.) The new sign looks, well… a little elementary school, poster-paint, and buzzword-tastic for my liking.

  2. Heather I agree. I was not home when it went into production. We hired an artist that was homeless and she is a creative chalk artist. This is her first time using paints for a sign. It was a bit hard to communicate with travel schedules and it did get all done on the one side before I could see it. The Folsom Street side is a little less buzzword-tastic :).

Odds are it will come down if we go back to an awning like was there some twenty years ago. When we get the parklet designed then we’ll know what’s the best thing. We just wanted to let people know there was a new owner and we weren’t going to sell Yellow Tail, Fritolay and Royal Gate
