We all know that life in Bernal Heights is mighty sweet.
But honey from Bernal Heights is even sweeter. Neighbor Emily wrote Bernalwood recently to say: “I know a Bernal family that is making our own Bernal honey! I just got a jar the other day, and it’s a very nice, smooth honey. It doesn’t taste like I-280 at all!”
Locavore honey? Yum! Soon we received an email from Neighbor Samantha, who explained:
My husband Darren is in one of the photos, shown working a hive at the Alemany Farm.
He works with Karen Peteros of the San Francisco Bee-Cause. The jarred honey in the photos comes from the San Francisco Bee Farms, with hives located in Bernal, Visitation Valley, The Mission, and Potrero Hill.
This honey can be purchased directly from us for $13.00 per jar. To make a purchase, please contact Darren and Samantha Des Roches at we3desroches*at*yahoo.com or 415-648-4991. Proceeds benefit the San Francisco Bee Cause: Helping Bees Helping People.

OMG!! Way to go Neighbor’s ! Did I also see this yummy hunny for sale at Martha’s?
We haven’t taken any of our honey to sell at Martha’s, so it’s unlikely. But the more local bee folk, the better, right???
Yum! I’ll likely check it out. I love the eucalyptus notes in Karen Peteros’s Glen Park honey…
I love the eucalyptus tones of Karen’s Glen Park honey too. Must be my inner-koala. This particular batch of local honey has more of an herbaceous/wildflower vibe. It’s light and refreshing.
Oooo, I walk past the bee boxes on the way to St. Mary’s with my dog every weekend. Is your honey unpasteurized/unrefined?
Great question, Heather! Yes, San Francisco Bee Farm honey is both unpasteurized and unrefined. As such, it is recommended that our raw honey not be fed to children under 1 year of age.
Sweet, sign me up! Emailing now.
I love this, but Alemany Farm is on top if a Superfund site. That seems a little spooky.
Hi Brooke! I’m a Superfund site geek, but I’ve never heard that Alemany was impacted, nor do I know of any past uses there that would have generated contamination. Any sources you can point me to?
Meanwhile, just for fun, google:

Alemany farm is not on the list.
