Bernaljournal reports that some new signs went up recently at the north and south gates to Bernal Heights Boulevard. It seems The City plans to use weed killer to combat fennel on the Hill. For what it’s worth, Bernaljournal is anti-pleased:
Trying to stop invasive and non natural plants is futile. They’ve been here for a couple hundred years and poisoning the hill is no remedy.
I’d propose bringing in sheep and goats as an alternative, but I suspect that wouldn’t go over well with the canine crowd.

I suspect the sheep and goats have a taste for both native and foreign flora.
I vote goat!
Sheep goats no problem for canine crowd — fun to chase and tasty snack when caught.
I’ve got the sheep conection! Give me a hollar when it’s time for some cute natural grazers. Then when it’s time, lamb BBQ on the hill for the entire hood!
Win-Win!
Fennel is invasive, non-native and can only be removed by pesticide or pick ax (we used the pick ax method in our back yard). It’s a victory for native plants to have it killed off by pesticide.
will goats eat it
we have a gentlemen in the hood who has goats that eat weeds and clear fields
also the swallowtail butterfly only eats fennel- those big green caterpillars that you find on fennel bushes turn into the most beautiful yellow and black butterflies
Here’s one I spotted up on the hill a few years ago:
let’s try that again

Here’s the toxoligy of monsanto’s pro-max.
Good luck trying to go native. I’d be happy to hand remove the bulbs with a group of volunteers. I see dogs eating the weeds as play up there all the time.
