A Wildlife Sighting During the Morning Commute

Good morning!

Erik Ellestad spotted this local critter on Monday morning at the corner of Crescent and Ellsworth, while waiting for the 23 Muni bus. Erik says, “Oh, we have all sorts of exciting wildlife down here on the Gritty South Side. It appears to be a Tree Rat, not a Norway Rat, though the poor thing didn’t look well.”

  1. Crescent and Ellsworth must be the spot! I saw a possum hanging on a street cleaning sign at that corner several months ago.

  2. I have noticed a few rats running along the fence tops in my back yard. Kind of cute but makes me want to get a cat.

  3. Zell, did you see the two women trying to coax the possum off of that street sign? One hitting at it with a broom and the other holding a blanket below?

I tried to give them the friendly advice, “Uh, that’s a wild animal,” but I believe they thought it was someone’s lost pet.

    • Phonecams, citizens? This is why The Great Provider gave us phonecams! This is why The Great Provider gave us blogs! Then, send the photos to bernalwood at gmail dot com. šŸ˜‰

    • YES!! You saw that too? Except I thought the woman was poking it with an umbrella.

No pics because the 23 was approaching when I saw all this, and I wasn’t going to wait another 25 minutes! Plus, there was no Bernalwood blog back then. šŸ™‚

  4. Oh dear. If a wild rat is out in broad daylight and allowing humans to get this close, he’s probably suffering quite a bit indeed. This might be a good situation for calling 311 so Animal Care & Control can come out and help.

  5. I used to live at Crescent and Gates – I saw all sorts of vermin on the Bernal south slope. A possum (same one?) got into our garage a couple of times.

  6. I think that possum got in my house last night about 3am. I live on Ellsworth near that corner and last night I awoke to a huge commotion downstairs with my bulldog barking up a storm , the back door open, dining room chairs awry. It was mayhem.
